Oh really? Are factory images different from customer images??? How?
And, if so, how can a customer like us provide one? When the kindles are shipped they have a customer image, haven't they?

Really,
that is why we included the word: "initial" in the filenames, they are the first to be installed on new hardware.

They are specifically packaged so that they can pass the "Downgrade Attack" test. Among other things.
Since they should never have shown up outside of the factory, being easy to jail break is one of those things.

Quite easy - if someone has a new-in-the-box, never yet powered on Kindle.

When the Kindle arrives at the customer's home, it is ***running*** a customer, production release.
But the previous installation image can still be recovered from the device.

Unless someone in Japan volunteers to do the recovery on their device, the PW3-32 will never be jail broken with this jail break.
Still waiting for that someone in Japan to PM me for the details.

Updated my PW2 to 5.8.5.0.2. The jailbreak survived and my hacks (python, screensaver, font) are working after reinstallation.

The booklet version of KUAL still experiences the problem mentioned here:

The kindlet version seems to work fine, however.

KUAL is a Kindlet.
So far, only the 8th. generation devices have Kindlet support disabled (it is still in the code), not the 5th generation devices.
We could probably change that, if someone updated JBpatch for the 5.8.5<something> firmware.
But that takes a Java Guru with lots of time on their hands.

Note: JBpatch will likely need to be put back to use, when Amazon starts using signed jars.

The author of the Booklet version is still away from the forum.
So unless a Java Guru steps up, it will remain broke.

I do have an 8th. generation device, but not the Java knowledge to fix the Booklet.

No word (yet) from anyone expecting a PW3-32 - so it will remain "Serial JB Only".

No, JimmyR reported that the booklet version has problems while the kindlet version works fine.

Yes. Just for clarification, the booklet version is broken--see the linked thread in my previous post. However, the kindlet version, KUAL-KDK-2.0.azw2, is working on my 6th generation PW2.

My KT-3 (8th. Generation) is still on 5.8.5, I'll put it on-line, let it update, and see how much worse the booklet version of KUAL becomes.

Note: The problems reported on 5.8.5.0.1 applies to 5.8.5 also.
They are easy to notice when using KUAL to control USBnetworking.

Note 2: We have a 'dispatcher' in the ";log mrpi" script - so that it can be extended to execute other scrips from searchbar commands with a bit of editing.
Just in case the Booklet version of KUAL quits completely.

Some have asked if the OTA blocker directory still worked on 8th generation devices running 5.8.5 -
Note: This status can vary for each and every firmware build.

It does, but not in the expected way.
The Kindle's system removes the directory entry, and creates a file with the OTA blocker name.

But in addition, you get a pop-up panel when an update is available and has been downloaded:

The message is (I paraphrase here):
"Not enough storage space to install the update."
When there is 2.4GB available.

The message should read:
"Mobileread user has OTA updates blocked."

After you acknowledge the notice, the system then deletes the *.partial file, leaving you without either the directory or filename.

So the next time it tries to download an update, it will succeed.

tl;dr:
If you ever get a popup panel telling you there is not enough space to install the update.
IMMEDIATELY go to 'airplane' mode after acknowledging the pop-up panel.
Then put your OTA blocker directory back and stay in airplane mode until we figure out how to deal with this new behavior.

What is required to extract that factory image?
'Cause I know a crazy girl that will probably buy it when it is sold in Italy and will likely help (or let me help) with it as long as it doesn't mean cracking it open.

We need a copy of the visible usb storage area, AT FIRST POWER ON.
Note: Person doing this will need access to a Linux system (other than the Kindle of course).
