I imagine you need to unzip the main-htmlviewer.tar.gz file, given our recent discussion of differing unzip behaviors.

Use it as-is.
That is the Jail Break tar-bomb I wrote of and how a Mac archiver will destroy its functionality.

The next step, the hotfix (JailBreak-1.14.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip) fails with an error (007 I think). I'm just assuming thats because the jailbreak step failed, I could be wrong but there is no sign that the jailbreak succeeded (I expected to see a jailbreak message on reboot, and a new jailbrake ebook?)

Please describe in detail how you are installing the update_*.bin file you extracted from that archive.

ok I think it has worked. I re-downloaded the file and I didn't get an error this time, the jailbreak ebook has also appeared. So i'm assuming i'm done now...

Please do not assume, accidentally skipping something can cause you problems in the future.

Re-read the full directions, step 0 through step 8 including the spoilers.

Well I think you're right. I tried to install the dummy package but there is no /mrpackages directory.

At this point I have followed the directions 3 times from step #0 through step #6, it appears to work, the firmware installs ok, the jailbreak (step #5) causes a reboot (but no other visible changes), and the fix generates the ebook.

So now do steps #7 and #8.

You will be installing MrPI during step #8 and then you will have a /mrpackages directory as a result of that.

The /mrpackages folder will be created when you install MrPI (one of the "additional" steps you skipped).

Oh, I'm a goof. I saw step 7 was optional to update to the newest firmware and didn't plan it and my brain just kind of stopped there like everything following was optional.

So close to the end and I tripped at the finish line. Everything works fine now, thanks for pointing out my foolishness.

I made the same mistake. Honestly this whole thing was way more convoluted than I was expecting. but props to OP for providing instructions.

You can give Lab126 credit for the requirement of such a convoluted approach.
There is another jail break approach, even worse than this one.
But I prefer to let Lab126 'fix' them one at a time.

(I am getting a percentage of their over-time pay.)

Edit: It looked like the JB took as I can now launch KUAL after updating to 5.8.2.

Hey all.

So since I found out that a jailbreak was available for the current Kindles, I decided to buy a Voyage in order to jb it so I could sync my collections from Calibre with the new Kindle.

My original FW was 5.8.2.0 on the Voyage. I used the instructions in Post 1 plus the lifehacker article (http://lifehacker.com/how-to-jailbre...dle-1783864074).

I was able to downgrade the FW to 5.5.0 and the jailbreak seemed to take. The book 'you are jailbroken' appeared. I was also able to install the hotfix. I have NOT updated the FW. If it's not absolutely necessary, I don't want to update the FW.

I also followed the instructions for installing KUAL (including the Mobilread Kindlet Kit as per the 'KUAL readme')+ MRPI.

My problem is KUAL fails to launch. I get the following message "The selected application could not be started. Please try again."

Maybe the JB didn't take? What should I try?
