Unless of course you want to do the screen-saver jailbreak. Then you need to remove the special offers first.

I just wanted to be reassured that the SO can be removed easily and in a matter of minutes. Anyway no longer needed: Amazon tricks.... Kindle w/ SO due friday, Kindle w/o due monday. I ordered the w/o SO, then came back to the item page (literally, seconds after) and saw that they are now shipping both versions for friday. So I cancelled my previous order and reissued it. My first question still stays though. ![]() |

But there are also no reports of successful recovery from a failed jail break with SO. To access a SO Kindle, you have to 'swipe' the screen - But a hung Kindle never gets far enough for you to do that. Hence the recommendation to disable special offers. It only matters if things don't work correctly the first time, and then it is too late. |

Problem reports have been way, way down since we pulled that package. But I can't say it has been none, since not all problems get reported. And the 5.6.1.1 initial works fine on the two PW-3 devices that I have. So I still don't know why the Chinese PW-3 devices often hung with it. I still haven't heard from anyone with a new-in-the-box PW3-32, so that one is not yet supported (I updated the directions and the table with that info). We still have a lot of talent available here, it is just that the usual, daily, contributors are all busy elsewhere. We will be able to deal with this new model, it is just going to take awhile longer than usual. Last edited by knc1; 11-02-2016 at 04:14 PM. |

So, I am following this guide with my KT2, and so far I have done step #6 completely.
I am not sure about step #7 though. I have downloaded FW 5.8.5 from Amazon, and I want to block OTA in the future. Should I upgrade to FW 5.8.5 first and then add the OTA-block, or do you have to put the OTA-block there before? And also; will the OTA block hinder after-market add-ins from being installed? Am I supposed to test with the "dummy installation package" and after which step should I use the dummy test? And I take it that you are supposed to installed MRPI or KUAL AFTER you have upgraded to the FW you want to use(FW 5.8.5 in my case). Sorry for the inconvenience, I want to make sure I am getting this right and I got a bit confused after step #6. |

The OTA block is a directory name in USB storage.
Put it in whenever convenient. If you want to run the current release (5.8.5.0.1? .0.2?) No, at least not ours, ours are not published OTA. The test package is only to reassure people who wonder if their device is really jailbroken. Completely optional. MrPI is bridged - that is, the search bar accessible part is. The document version of KUAL is in USB storage, so not affected. The booklet version of KUAL is an update_*.bin format package - same rule as all other update_*.bin packages - it must be re-installed. When in doubt - re-install. |

Okey, that cleared my questions!
I did step #7: Updated to FW 5.8.5 Spoiler:
Then I installed KUAL and KUAL helper. Also got MRPI, KOReader and some game. Added the folder/directory for OTA block after everything was done. Jailbreak works great, thanks to all of you awesome people who made the jailbreak and packages! ![]() Last edited by HerrMuffin; 11-04-2016 at 04:23 AM. Reason: missed ota block |

failed JB?
Alright, I've gotten stuck and I'm out of ideas for troubleshooting.
I have a PW2 and have never jailbroken before. I was on the most recent update (5.8.5), device registered, special offers disabled. I did a device reset and then installed the the factory image (factory_PW2_5.4.3.2_initial) Since I have a pw-2 I followed the link to the old jailbreak page and installed the jailbreak by "Unzip the contents of the kindle-5.4-jailbreak.zip archive to the root directory of your Kindle." It was successful and I got **** JAILBREAK **** message at the bottom of my screen. From here I did a restart since I saw mentioned it might be needed for next steps to work and I figured anyway, it couldn't hurt. From here I'm under the impression everything is successful so I go to use the dummy test file linked in the post and... Quote:

The directions say to skip two steps, it does not say anything about skipping 4 steps.
Return and finish with steps 7 and 8. The /mrpackages folder will be created when you install MrPI (one of the "additional" steps you skipped). |

I followed the instructions through to applying the jailbreak main-htmlviewer.tar.gz but its not working at that point. To summarize so far:
device started out as registered and fully up to date firmware wise. Identified model as PW3 (G090G105) Ensured no passphrase, and did factory reset. Enabled airplane mode Applied factory firmware 5.7.4 (successful, can see new version number in device info). Copied the main-htmlviewer.tar.gz file to the root. typed ;installHtml in the search box, device reboots normally not jail broken I've tried rebooting and resetting a number of times, i've also redownloaded the main-htmlviewer.tar.gz file a few times and tried again 3-4 times with the same result. |
