Thanks for the tips! Now that it's done with its bleeding-profusely stage, it seems to have settled down into a manageable thumping.

I might be able to go to the craft fair anyway. My sister got pissed off when she heard I couldn't go. My mother is feeling better already, so if needed she can help if it gets busy in the store. Apparently my sister compared the craft fair to the Christmas billiard tournament my father always attends, he would be very upset if he couldn't go.

Today's rant: I did clean the kitchen cupboards, since I've promised earlier this week and now I'm cursing my grandfather who made the kitchen. In his infinite wisdom the only thing he varnished on the inside of the cupboards are the top of the shelves. All the other sides aren't even sanded properly and are very rough and something splintery. Which means that you can't just wipe them down, because a cloth or sponge will snag and rip. I needed to use a brush to clean those sides and with a brush you need to use more water, which means it's a messier job. Plus, I got several splinters in my hands.

WTF...

That's another level of 'not finishing the inside.'

Have him read The Belgariad, by David Eddings. Somewhere, there's a conversation along these lines:

Garion: "Durnik, why do you finish the back of that furniture? It's against the wall."
Durnik: "A craftsman should always do the best work he can."
Garion: "But nobody is ever going to see that unfinished work at the back."
Durnik: "No, but *YOU* still know it's there, so *YOU* know your furniture is not finished."

I'll have to look it up for the exact wording, but when I read it the first time, it stuck; so much so that, when writing software, I'm almost incapable of using a solution I *know* is less than perfect with regard to maintenance and extensibility and all, even though it might be faster to implement.

One of the important reasons for finishing all surfaces of wood is to stabilize the moisture content. Maybe you could sand the insides down and paint them before you do that "Girls Gone Wild" at the craft fair thing.

I'll mention it to you're father.

That will be hard, since he died 16 years ago. But looking at the house this is no surprise. My great grandfather bought it, and he cobbled things together, my grandfather did and my father still does. The washbasin in the laundry room next to my rooms is very low, I've never heard of any small people in my family so I suspect the person who installed it ran out of drainpipe. A couple of years ago I replaced the faucet, I had all the right parts, only to find out that the cold water was connected not with a water thingie but with a gas connector thingie.

LOL, my father never did anything about it because my parents had planned to replace to kitchen soon after moving in almost 37 years ago. They still do, so not much is done about the kitchen. I'm not cleaning those cupboards again, however.

Today I helped at my sister's apartment. We brushed the walls and ceiling of the two bedrooms, hallway and dining/living room with a cleaning solution, so she can get started with painting this weekend. So I think I've deserved my trip to the fair on Wednesday. I just opened the jar I put the money in for the last couple of months and I have saved €350, quite a lot more than I anticipated, so I can really go "wild".

Do we even want to know how they managed that connection?

Apparently it wasn't a big deal. My father hooked up the faucet within minutes (after he found his box with connector thingies, which took a lot longer).

Thank you. I'm currently dividing my wishlist into to two: items I will buy whether they are on sale or not and a list of thing I'll buy if it's a good deal. Then I have a third list of things my father wants.

When selling the house: "I did everything myself."
Potential buyers of said house: "Yeah, it really shows!"

And then one thinks that is a compliment...

You shouldn't do things if you can't do them properly.

My dad did everything himself in the house, and he did it impeccably. Now he still does things himself, but I think there actually isn't a way of doing them worse... Fortunately he's not doing any building anymore. It's all things that can be easily fixed if need be. New wallpaper, new paint job, that sort of thing... when sold, the new owners of the house will probably replace the kitchen first thing, as it's now almost 30 years old and about to fall apart.

It seems we have a lot in common. Maybe Freeshadow is right and we should meet. We can then already make some plans with regard to our parent's houses, and then trek off to our very own mountain forest in... well... anywhere in northwest Europe. Sweden seems nice.

He was the only one to come over and be friendly (plenty came over, but if I bent down to pet them, they turned around and walked away!) I put him on my shoulder, and he growled when I tried to pet any other kitties. He claimed me from the start.

But it took about a year between losing my last dog and getting Max before I could consider a replacement. I'm not quite ready yet.

And before you suggest lots of kitties? I am a HORRIBLE housekeeper. The accumulated hair from *one* cat was all I could stand to live with!

OMG, that's me and Mr. Hitch to the nth. His sister has grandchildren, of the running-screaming kind. (One of the boys is intellectual, thank god, and reads. But the others are thrust into the spotlight to entertain us each year, singing, dancing and the like. Now, that in and of itself would not be dreadful, but there are HOURS of very loud practice, before the grand entrance.

Well, gives me something to be thankful for. I will say for the last three years, my niece would strip both her girls to their undies (or diapers) before she fed them. She said she was tired of the mess the kids made of their clothes, and it was easier to wipe off their bodies. I worried they'd never be able to eat without taking all their clothes off first! But apparently, she's starting to allow them to eat fully clothed.

I see Material Design on Android (and like it there.) I don't see it on the desktop or laptops.

Granted, I don't use Chrome, though I have a current version installed to keep track of development. I've used Mozilla code since it was still the code name of an internal Netscape project, and Firefox has been my production browser for years.

Of course, Firefox is looking more and more like Chrome these days, and the Australis redesign which I mostly liked had FF users sying "If I wanted my browser to look like Chrome, I'd use Chrome!"
