That's a bit peculiar to me and could likely be troubleshot by the font-tweakers here if you'd like, but I see you've bought your Aura. I love the form factor of that device. Happy reading!

Is there a patch like this for the original Kobo Aura? I can live without the font weight adjustment but it would be nice to have it and since I only use my Kobo with side loaded books I can only use it sometimes.

The font weight adjustment isn't about sideloaded books, it is only available for the built-in fonts. If you use one of these when reading, you should always be able to adjust the font weights. The patch makes it so that any font can be adjusted. And it should work on any of the Kobo devices.

Thank you. I've noticed the font weight adjustment working sometimes and not others but I've never really looked into why. I'll look for that patch. Although if all I have to do is use a built in font to solve the problem that'll work for me. I hardly ever change the font so if that's true I'm wondering why it works sometimes and not others. Is there something that forces the use of a font built into the book?

Barry, the patch is right here: Index to the Metazoa firmware patches

Specifically the Freedom to advanced fonts control post. I just installed it on my Kobo this weekend. Be sure to pay attention to the directions, but it isn't too difficult.

Thanks for the pointers. I just read the instructions and downloaded the patches and firmware and looked it all over and I've decided it's just not worth the effort for enabling bolder fonts. I understood it well enough. I think I did it once before to get a different feature on my older Kobo Glo. I'm not sure it was this exact same patch set but it was pretty much the same thing.

Anyway I don't doubt that I can do it but I have 3 Auras and it's just not worth the trouble. When you get to my age you might understand.

I do like slightly bolder fonts but it's a very minor issue for me. I can read fine either way.

Thanks for showing me the links.

I get that. I've read on my Kobo for however long without advanced options on sideloaded fonts. Now that it's enabled I likely wont use it much.

Honestly, I did it because I like to tinker. Which is probably why I have an affinity for the Kobo in the first place.

I've always liked to tinker as well. I'm a retired programmer and that's exactly the sort of tinkering I've always enjoyed. But I'm getting older now and somehow the fun is going out of the tinkering and I'm more and more becoming an end user.

Omigod!!! Did I just say that! I hope none of my former co-workers are reading this.

No, but could you send me a link to the seller?

Thanks!

I linked to them in post #4. Here's a link to their Auras, but the same seller has other Kobos as well. I was looking at their H20s.

I'm not associated with this seller in any way. But a few different folks here have bough from him(?) eBay link to Spinningnoon

Thanks. I thought I had the right one for the aura, but wanted to check. LOVE the looks/specs for the h2o!

Seems same seller also has H2O and Mini so seems to be retired models. Wonder if that means they're going to have Glo HD soon and if they do for how much.

Edit: Never used them but if you live outside the US, I found https://www.liquidationoutlet.ca/pro...-gb-wifi-black who seem to have a very similar offer. It's CAD59.95 for open box (you can also get a refurb for CAD10 less) Aura. And CAD20 shipping for NZ. This compares to USD49.95 and USD16 shipping for the eBay seller. At current exchange rates it's about USD6 or CAD8 cheaper. I'm paying for conversion both ways so that isn't an issue either. Never tried that site but they look like they're probably reliable. Possibly other liquidation sites have the Kobo Aura too (http://liquidationmania.com/Listing/...lack-NEW-OPEN- do but AFAICT they don't have international shipping) and maybe other sellers on eBay, didn't look that well.

My Kobo Glo HD died last week after accidentally getting stepped on (don't ask), so I'm looking for a new device. Unfortunately the Glo HD does not appear to be available anymore at our local stores. I purchased an Aura Edition 2 but am generally disappointed, it's certainly not worth almost as much as I paid for the Glo HD. If it helps, I'm from Canada, so Kindle and Kobo are pretty much what I'm looking at here.

Right now I'm looking at eBay or Amazon, and have whittled it down to the original Aura, a Glo HD, or a Mini. I have a few questions;

-How's durable is the original Aura? I hear it has a glass screen, so would it be one to scratch/break easily?
-Also how's the screen, since it uses glass (more glare?) and a lower resolution than the Glo HD? The Edition 2 resolution is starting to grow on me, although I balk at the price compared to what I paid for the Glo HD, to use that as a yardstick.
-How are custom fonts on the Mini? I believe I read somewhere that the Mini was around the 160s in terms of dpi.
-Do the Aura and Mini have Pocket integration?
-To anybody who has the Kobo Clip light for the Mini, how well does it work compared to a frontlight? I see a local Craiglist posting that bundles a case and the light with a Mini, which I'm also considering.
-Also, any recommended sellers on eBay/Amazon?

Basically the most important things for me are Pocket integration, readability, and also custom fonts, which should be no problem with the patching system.

Thanks in advance for your help!
@gavalanche20

I noticed yesterday that Best Buy Canada is selling the Kobo Glo HD on-line, if that's any help. I think it was priced at about $133.

I"ve been watching ebay and haven't seen any better deals than the ones you just mentioned! The mini was very popular (clickthrough and sales) from my blog when it was available. I still see searches for it come through.

Hey guys, this happened a while back but I went ahead and ordered that Kobo Aura from Spinningnoon, and I've been using it for a few weeks now. Shipping was great for the Kobo, and I also ended up getting a case from the same seller. All in all it cost me half of how much I paid for the Edition 2 plus case and so far, I certainly can't complain.

Really liking the form factor, and surprised by how much I liked the capacitive screen compared to the resistive ones on the Glo HD, also since the Edition 2 seemed to be relatively inaccurate at times. I do notice however that it locks up more than the Glo HD did, mostly with picture-heavy Pocket articles, but even before considering the price I'm very happy with my decision. Thanks guys!
