FREE--Stephen Wolfram's An Elementary Introduction to the Wolfram Language.
Understanding the material in this book is waaaaaaaaaaaay over my pay grade, but the Wolfram Company is offering, free, Stephen Wolfram's An Elementary Introduction to the Wolfram Language. It is 324 pages, possibly in full color.
While I understand practically nothing about programming languages, I am familiar with a specialized search engine called WolframAlpha. I am assuming that the information in this book has something to do with what allows that search engine to do what it does. WolframAlpha is a specialized search engine. It describes itself as a "computational knowledge engine." Where it excels is in doing computations to arrive at the information that you want to know, finding statistical information, and such like. And, another area in which it shines is in its search results. There is no digging through a huge number of hits to find the piece of information that you want to know. You can usually see it with just a glance. Compare that with Google and other traditional search engines, where you often have to dig through the search results to find the particular piece of information that you wanted. I encourage you to take the search engine on a test drive. Anyway, back to the book . . . . this is one that is regularly sold, not something that is just thrown together to create a giveaway as a promotion. For example, Amazon has the Kindle edition for $9.99 at the present time. Find out all kinds of information about the book on this webpage. The link that leads to the free book is the one on the far righthand side of that webpage that says, "Notebook edition: Download Directly." It is a zip file. There may be a link which leads you to the whole, compiled book, but I didn't see it. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 10-21-2016 at 01:21 PM. |

In college, I had to take a language called COBOL. The math and science majors had to take FORTRAN (I'm putting a date on myself, here, I know). I actually made an "A" in COBOL, but I had to work to get it, and didn't enjoy it. To further put a date on myself, we had to use key punch machines to punch a card for every line of code. After we finished, we took the stack of cards over to the administration building, where they had a mainframe, and they ran the cards through. You'd get the printout back in a couple of days, usually. If you messed up somewhere, you'd have to go back to a key punch machine and re-punch the cards which had incorrect coding. My, how times have changed. And, a lot for the better, as in programming computers. |

I learnt Fortran at Uni, joined an oil company who discovered this with glee and a little later they had a rush rush project to have a system that reported on every capital item the company had world wide so they sent to learn Cobol. I thus ended up the only programmer who knew both languages and advised on how to interface them. I then got a overnight run down from six hours to forty minutes and became a performance consultant. |

Military History, free
Tanks for the Memories: An Oral History of the 712th Tank Battalion in World War II by Aaron Elson Aaron Elson's work as an oral historian has been used as source material in more than two dozen book in the U.S. and "across the pond," as well is in about a dozen documentaries including "The Color of War" and "Patton 360." "Tanks for the Memories" is the book that turned him into an oral historian. The stories and anecdotes range from descriptions of life in the horse cavalry, growing up in the Great Depression, food on the front, medical treatment after being wounded, to vivid descriptions of combat inside a tank and out. "Tanks for the Memories" was originally published in 1994. This expanded second edition was originally published in 2001. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005FRG8SG/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005FRG8SG/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B005FRG8SG/ They Were All Young Kids: The story of Lieutenant Jim Flowers and the first platoon, Company C, 712th Tank Battalion, on Hill 122 by Aaron Elson On 10 July, 1944, four Sherman tanks went to the aid of an infantry battalion that was surrounded at the top of Hill 122 in Normandy by elite German paratroopers. The plan was for the tanks to create a path through the almost jungle-like tangle of trees and shrubbery and for a company of infantry to follow close behind, creating an opening that would let the rest of the battalion break out. The plan seemed to be working as the tanks crashed through the German defenses on the steep front slope of the hill. At the bottom, the tanks crossed a road, climbed over a hedgerow, crossed a field, climbed another hedgerow and kept on going. It was late in the afternoon when the first shell struck Lieutenant Jim Flowers' tank and caromed off, with a sound he would compare to "a big bell ringing." Within moments, all four tanks were knocked out, three of them burning fiercely. Nine of the 20 crew members were killed, several wounded, and two both wounded and captured. For Flowers and his gunner, Jim Rothschadl, their ordeal was just beginning. This is the story of that battle as told by Flowers and several of the surviving members of his platoon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005L9YA7E/ https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B005L9YA7E/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B005L9YA7E/ |

Microsoft Press' Microsoft Virtual Academy is offering 44 free ebooks on computer matters.
Don't expect these to be dumbed-down books with titles like Windows 10 for Absolute Dummies or Learning How to Use Computers, for the Over-65 Crowd. These free books are ones like IT guys would use to learn from or possibly use as reference tools. They are high-tech stuff. Are you still with me? Good. Then here's the website where you can go to get any or all of these books, gratis. You'll notice that the ebooks are available in all three of our favorite flavors--PDF, ePub, and mobi for Kindle. Wondering about the value of these books that Microsoft is giving away right now? You might get a good idea by taking a look at the generally less-technical offerings at The Microsoft Press Store. Just a guesstimate here, but I'd say that the average regular price (they do have specials, and you might be interested in browsing through them or even, as I've done, request their specials newsletter (offers to send you the newsletter are prominently featured on the webpage)) of an ebook there is around $50. To get the free ebooks from Microsoft Press MVA it does appear to require membership of the virtual academy. At least I couldn't find any other way of bringing up the download page.

Some fellow (an author) gives away a bunch of books about Microsoft software, and a message about that usually makes the rounds every year or two. I haven't seen a message about that recently; I may dig around and see if I can't find that one. |
