I've looked at your epub and, as predicted, the extra metadata files (inside the epub, not in metadata.opf) that EpubMerge uses to unmerge have all be removed.

It looks like Calibre Convert (EPUB->EPUB) was done on the file. Calibre is the only dc:contributor listed and I see similar changes (extra metadata files removed and files renamed the same way) doing a Calibre Convert (EPUB->EPUB) for myself.

With those files removed, there isn't any current way to update those epubs as anthologies.

I know I've recommended Calibre Convert (EPUB->EPUB) for certain problems in past, and it's never been a problem with individual story books. But apparently it now breaks anthology books.

I suspect that it probably always did, since discarding the apparently useless metadata files is not an unreasonable thing to do from Calibre's POV.

However, surviving a Calibre Convert (EPUB->EPUB) isn't an unreasonable expectation, so I will look into whether I can make it work for anthologies. Might not be until next week, though.

I don't remember having done so, but I did have some problems in that general time that I did some various things to troubleshoot it and it's a distinct possibility that was one. Thank you for looking!

Teaching the UnMerge feature of EpubMerge how to deal with post-convert epubs is a pain.

However, a small tweak to FanFicFare would make it possible to manually split the anthology epub (with EpubSplit), update individual books, then manually merge them back together again (with EpubMerge). A couple new features to EpubSplit might even make it something approaching easy.

FYI, that's the path I'm looking at right now, anyway. Judging by the lack of discussion, it's not a huge priority.

It's worked great, I downloaded several stories I read, and some older ones. I've found a couple of errors in it. If you dont fix them, that's alright, but I thought I'd bring them up so they're known.

A couple of stories got "Failed List Index Out of Range" I can't get them to work
http://royalroadl.com/fiction/1612 is an example.

Also, http://royalroadl.com/fiction/1054 story gets a critical failure and the job fails. It's an older version of another story, so it's not a big deal.

This change, along with the new Test Version of EpubSplit, is to address thatblondelady's problem with Calibre Convert messing up FanFicFare Anthology books.

The new Test Version of EpubSplit makes it quite a bit easier to manually split an anthology into individual books.

The new test version of FanFicFare is able to update those split epubs--if you have Search EPUB text for Story URL? checked. I would also recommend using 'Update Epub Always' mode.

Then you can use EpubMerge to create a new (fixed) anthology book.

@Atherton25 - I'm not ignoring you--I've sent a message to wassname, the developer who added the RoyalRoadL code. I'll look at your issue myself if I don't hear back from them in a few days.

Thanks for the feedback @Atherton25 , it's good to fix the errors while it's still fresh in my mind. Those books should work in the next test version.

The 1612 problem is fixed.

The 1054 problem is actually caused by an SVG image in chapter 48 causing calibre's image processing to fail catastrophically--the entire BG process dies instead of just throwing an error. (I've no idea how I would catch that more gracefully off hand.)

I've tested with a couple different SVG files (1 2). 1 failed to convert but without crashing and 2 converted as expected.

I'm declaring that this isn't a problem with the adapter and suggest that you disable image processing for that story:

That setting will still include images (which that story has a lot of), but won't try to resize them or convert them to JPG.

At some point Fanficfare won't be the best description,sinc support will be for web fiction too. There are a few larger sites up there and Fanficfare is setup so well to just pic up the last chapter compared to some other programs that are more complicated and can't just add-on the last chapter fanfiction or otherwise

@wassname I'll send you a pm with a couple more so you can check if it works with those when I get back home.there were only two errors as I said before, but one had at least 6 different fics with the same error, and that could be for more than one reason.

I do appreciate you getting the plugins. Working for RRL ... I had been using another downloader and manually entering some info, but it doesn't have the same update feature as Fanficfare does plus it quit working with the new RRL site update a week or two ago. I'd only gotten about 30 stories down at the time and was cursing myself for not just downloading tons of them soni had them when I got to them.

Er well that update got posted while I was typing up the first message on my phone. I'll check the other stories tonight and implement that fix. I though it was a problem with the image based on the error. I'm glad to know the fix is fairly simple in terms of just making a notation in the comments.

Yeah, no. Having changed the name once, I have no intention of going through that pain again. Plus, the vast majority of the sites supported (and used, at last poll) are fanfic sites. Original fiction is a definite minority.

Assuming you understand that "notation in the comments" means personal.ini.
