My Dot's delivery date still shows as early next week. It looks like it might ship early, though, so perhaps it'll arrive Saturday or Sunday.

Got my Dot all set up and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm impressed with how loud it can get on its own with no external speaker. It's not top quality sound on high volume but I only need that kind of volume to drown out loud neighbors (which it does).

As predicted, I am digging the voice activation.

Congrats. I plan to use mine without add-on speakers in the kitchen and bedroom. For the bedroom, it'll make a great smart alarm clock - audiobooks, music, FM radio, OTRadio, nature sounds, time, weather, news, timers, and alarms.

Since it powers using a standard phone charger and mUSB cable, it's very portable moving from room to room where charger/cable combos will already be in place.

I was thinking along similar lines. No permanent place for the Dot in the kitchen but I can move it there when I'm cooking and want to listen. Normally I'd just use the Tap but messy hands make the Dot a better choice.

I still think I'll probably try to snag another for the bedroom in the Black Friday sales.

I caved and got another Dot for the kitchen as well as a Hue starter kit. Voice controlling lights is too fun!

I mounted the kitchen Dot to the wall so it doesn't take up valuable counter space. I used a Velcro Command strip so I can move it if I want to. I am enjoying the setup so far. Music everywhere!

Microsoft's own Amazon Echo

Microsoft is preparing to launch a "HomeHub" feature in Windows 10 to control smart internet-connected devices, but rumors have also emerged of a separate "Home Hub" device with Cortana. Windows Central reports that Microsoft has an Amazon Echo competitor ready to unveil on October 26th, with Cortana built-in. The voice-activated speaker is said to include the ability to store files on the device, and respond to questions just like Alexa.

If Microsoft does reveal such a device then it will be up against strong competition from Amazon's Echo devices that have integrated hundreds of third-party apps and features. Google has also unveiled its Home device, and Apple is rumored to be working on its own Siri-powered hardware. Microsoft's own Cortana-powered device will have to do more than just answer questions.
