KT3, 5.8.1.1 -> 5.8.5 : jb auto-reinstalled as intended.
Bummer: Now you can't take a screenshot unless the device is registered. And registration process requires you to agree to Amazon's EULA. Well, we have been ignoring that for nearly a decade, I guess we can keep on ignoring it. ![]() A nice point - They did a good job of cleaning up the Settings menu. Much less chance of someone hitting "Reset Device" when they wanted "Restart". Note that the labels are more distinct now. Any similarity with the KUAL menu is, I am sure, unintended. Audio was last seen on the KT - I don't know about the KT2 (mine is still disassembled). But the KT3 on 5.8.5 does audio output via Bluetooth (something else to modify - make Bluetooth general not just speakers). Last edited by knc1; 10-20-2016 at 07:19 PM. |

So, just to clarify as the last jailbreak I did was quite some time ago on a Paperwhite - I now have a Kindle Voyage with firmware 5.8.2.1. I've got it in Aeroplane Mode, so all I need to do now is follow steps 0 to 8 in the first post in order to jailbreak. Is that correct?
Also, just to clarify, skipping steps 5 & 6 is only relevant to PW2 users, is that right? Many thanks for any assistance you can provide! |

Yes. Your welcome. And you can update to 5.8.5 after the process. |

Our update bridge routine only bridges those things critical to keeping the jail break across the update. It has been that way since Amazon switched to full image updates, at about firmware version 5.1.2. |

I've successfully jailbroken and updated my Voyage - there were a couple of obstacles, though. The actual JB process went smoothly enough, but the installation of KUAL was a problem; I did eventually get that working, though. I've also updated to the 5.8.5 firmware, and installed the screensaver hack too. I'm going to see about installing the font hack as well, and then I'll just have a browse and see if there's anything else I fancy installing.
Am I reading your above post correctly, knc1, in believing that each time I update the firmware in the future, I'll have to reinstall the screensaver hack, font hack, and anything else I have installed? Also, I still have my Voyage in Aeroplane Mode, but I don't want to receive OTA updates when I switch wi-fi back on (I do use the wi-fi from time to time to submit review scores to Goodreads when I finish a book etc). To this end, I've created a blank folder called update.bin.tmp.partial on the root of my KV (at the same level as /documents). Do I need to do anything else? Or will that block any future OTA updates? Thanks for all your help, it's been greatly appreciated! |

You are correct, you must reinstall the hacks using MRPi every time you update. It won't delete any files you had i.e. images for screensavers when you update so just put the .bin files in the right folder and run the installer.
Font hack doesn't work on 5.x software, if I'm not mistaken. What was the issue with installing KUAL, if you don't mind me asking? |

I'm happy to tell you about what happened with me and KUAL - having downgraded to 5.50, I tried to install KUAL by putting the 2.0 azw file into the /documents folder. It produced the icon on the Kindle, but it presented with an error message when I tried to open it. I then realised that I hadn't installed MRPi (although I didn't believe from the instructions that I needed to, for installing KUAL at any rate). So I installed MRPi, and then tried putting the 2.0 azw file on there again - it still wouldn't run. At this point I used the package installer instead and actioned it from the search bar, and that worked. Then I updated the firmware, totally oblivious at that point that this would apparently necessitate a reinstall of KUAL. ![]() ![]() In all, it left me rather baffled (I'm still baffled now, and apologies if my explanation doesn't make sense! ![]() I'm just glad that it works now to be honest; I can live with the two KUAL entries on my device! PS - Have I done enough to block OTA updates by the way, or do I need to do anything else? |

You MUST read and follow ALL instructions carefully and completely.
Which also means: *1) In the (ascending) order as numbered. *2) No getting creative or skipping around allowed. Yes, the entire process of Steps 0 ... 8 is long. Yes, it does take a lot of plugging and unplugging. Yes, it does take a lot of time, sitting and waiting for the Kindle to finish the current action. But I promise you, it is the shortest (in reading and in time) path to the desired result. = = = = = I strongly suggest that everyone use the Booklet version of KUAL. Amazon has repeatedly announced they where dropping support for Kindlets and the old document style KUAL is a Kindlet. For devices prior to 8th generation, for now, you MAY use either. But you can expect that to change as Amazon continues to 'improve' their firmware. Which means the version of KUAL currently with a blank front page. = = = = = To fix yours, just re-install it (the update_*.bin KUAL in the KUAL archive) by putting it in /mrpackages and then triggering mrpi. When that one is working, you can delete the old KUAL document version that is in /documents. NOTHING ELSE, just that one document. = = = = = The 'FONT question' - - It should still work. If it doesn't, it is because the maintainer is away at school. NiLuJe is expecting to have time near the end of this month to make an appearance here and get caught up. That should include editing any 'supported firmware version' statements made in the FONT add-in top post and thread to bring them up to date. Last edited by knc1; 10-22-2016 at 08:27 AM. |

Extension updates after upgrading
Successfully upgraded from 5.7.4 to 5.8.5 on a KOA. Using the booklet version of KUAL. Reinstalled the following through MRPI:
I also have other extensions:
I have checked backdoor lock, helper, KUAL+ and they seem to be functional. Do any of these extensions need to be "reinstalled" by deleting the folder and copying over a new, clean one? In particular, GAWK.... Is GAWK still running and if it isn't clear would it hurt to reinstall it? Also, batterystatus doesn't seem to work but maybe it didn't on 5.7.4...I can't remember. Clicking the KUAL menu item "Print Battery Status" doesn't do anything. |

Confirm successful PW2 downgrade from 5.8.5 (no jailbreak) to 5.4.3.2 initial.
