This discussion, and the fact that Gearbest has a time-limited special on the phone for USD $139.89, prompted me to order it. Also, a very recent in-depth 20-minute review by s7yler is on YouTube.

I would use the YotaPhone 2 for accessing GPS maps during long runs, biking, hiking and reading ebooks while camping. It would not fully replace my existing iOS, Android or Kindle devices.

I'll have the phone a few days after trocchietto and will report back.

In case not already known there is a thorough review (as their reviews typically are) at GSMArena http://www.gsmarena.com/yota_yotapho...views-6959.php . Note that was 2 years ago, so now quite old in cellphone terms.

In pointing to that review I am not inferring any personal recommendation of the device by me; although I have an E Ink reader I do not use it as I prefer other more versatile displays, so it would never appear on my shopping list.

I think you mean "implying", not "inferring".

OMG. There are not other words. Just arrived 20 minutes ago. I spent 275 eu, but I am already in love. The phone is gorgeus refined, even the package offers a lot of high quality design. I received also a bumper that edges the sides and the eink screen. The LCD amoled 5 inches screen is good, but what really surprises me is how is fast to move data from lcd to eink. When you are under the sun outside is so amazing to see such a crispy ereader screen, having the experience to use a (decent) fluid eink phone. It is arrived with chinese settings, but from the first screen immediately I selected Netherlands and all the settings switched in Dutch. The fact you can maintain it on your desk from the eink side, made the galaxy note 7 always-on screen ridicolous to me. Who owns this phone will forget to charge the battery, if you see the remaining hours and press the safe mode, you will open your mouth. Fits perfectly in the pocket of the jeans. There are some basic Yota apps, I am just starting to read web coding pages from the lcd part and mirroring back on the eink side and I am without breath. Togheter with my samsung tab s2 and the power bank I mentioned I finally found my final device in less than 700 grams. Another huge advantage is that I can leave the eink web page on the desk, it remains in that scroll position, giving me the feeling I am reading a real paper. The only negative side so far is that I do not know how to force a refresh of the eink screen, but does not look a big issue at all being the eink readability really good, and having the feeling to use an eink reader really fast....finally! Hope will find some issues, but so far looks perfect. So far I am not able to find a way to use the eink landscape mode, but in teory I am working at office

EDIT looking forward to see a sub android section yotaphone 2

Can you try using an ereader that scrolls such as Moon+ reader on the e-ink side of the Yotaphone and let us know how that works. I don't have to scroll but I strongly prefer it and if that works reasonably well I'll probably consider getting one.

I think I remember some talk of only being able to send single screens to the e-ink screen but I'm not sure I remember that correctly. When you get a chance can you give some details about what reading on it is like?

Barryem, because of your cool avatar I am going to do it.

First of all a punctualization: the Landcape mode in eink works, and is fantastic, just change the inclination and so will do the screen, just as a tablet/phone

Back to you: I already installed Mantano and Moon+Reader pro.
I tried Mantano already can even press the words and look up the dictionary.
Simple speaking: Yotaphone offers three different functionalities, one of them is called mirror, that as intuitively it suggests, EXACTLY what you see on the LCD screen can be mirrored on the
eink screen, even video.

The point is that apps animations are not optimal for EINK screens, and decrease the lifespan of the device, so there are also ad hoc applilcations that are made for the eink screen. I told you with my 3 devices combination I found the nirvana( apart I cannot do coding),I will come back to you in these days when I am going to install my +3000 books/articles on the phone, and will use mantano and moon+reader, testing the sync functionalities and all the rest, so far so good

The interest raised by this post, it witnesses that double screen with good desing is a groundbreaker, if we generate enough enthusiasm in the community, companies will become less myope. Mantano, Moon+Reader and few other interesting options are light years beyond the typical awkward ereader inbuilted software imo, the free dictionaries that can be downloaded offline with a minimal hack do a great job, and if you are in the mood of doing some color highlights, or switch super fast between the pages, turning the device to lcd is one( maybe two) second distant!

Will let you know better barryem, anyway please consider that other reviews are coming, I am aware I am too much enthusiastic, now the phone is doing the first full charge, I will update in these days with Moon+Reader.

EDIT: what you mention is related to other eink devices, usually cover for phones! Possibly you mention a cover for Iphone really advertised. I can tell you that with this YP2 when you turn on mirror mode is like to have a fast live eink phone, so no static screens at all, I told you that I switched from chrome lcd to eink and I left the device on my desk while I was scrolling the device, and like a piece of papier remained there, then without any wake up, after 20 minutes i scrolled the page again, and went down another bit, just amazing, but let's see some other review, or better, please see the video reviews, what you see is what you get

Carrying that shotgun gets me a lot of cooperation.

I'm really enthusiastic about the idea of an e-ink phone. I have free service from medicare so I'd also have to make sure it will work with that, but it most likely will if it works with AT&T in the USA.

If it works smoothly with Moon+ I want one. If it also will work as a phone for me I'll probably get one. But that's a lot of money for me to spend for something that I'm not confident about.

Well I found a solution that works perfect to me in less than 600 grams with 3 components. I would like to share with who could be interested

1)I bought a samsung galaxy note tab s2 265 grams, super amoled screen 365 euro, 414 ppi definition, really fast. There I have kobo, kindle, fbreader, mantano moon+reader, with dictionaries colordict, cora.. I can see the coverage of my books on the sun, scroll demanding pdf really fast, finding notes and whatever i need. Also the roundabout 3000 digital books I own( no drm) are (almost)backed up in a way that I can preserve highlight and notes, i namely I found a solution, but still have to implement it. Also, when I am on the go, or just want to lay on the bed, this magnificent(8.0) inches tablets allow me to see movies and tv series on the bed, train, or wherever I am

2)Yotaphone 2 for 275 euro 145 grams, the famous russian phone with android lollipop. It will arrive in few days, and has a double eink lcd display that can be skipped easily. I am planning to put the same software to read the books under the sun, exploiting the fast eink surface, and also to put the podcasts and ebook audio I love while I am on the go or with bike, when using a tablet would be awkward. And no eyestrains of course.

3) a 30 euro power bank of 150 grams from xtorms, in the case the tablet battery needs a recharge on the go. Not the yotaphone, because does not have problems with battery life as I can switch it continuosly in eink mode adding hours. Not to name that google maps can last for hours on the eink part, and all the notifications, watch, forecast are always on.

All in all with 660 euro and 560 grams, I have an ereader eink, a good and durable video player, a telephone and a tablet android, while before, with an amount of money much bigger, I had an ereader+coverage+ telephone+tablet + adapters and cable that needed a backpack, while now I can manage to put the telephone in one trouser pocket, the power bank in another, and the tablet( really thin, in whatever jacket)

I am curious to know if you like my decision and if you have a similar framework.
You are very serious.

The words aren't interchangeable.

Inferring is a conclusion you reach based on other peoples' views.
Implying is a suggestion you're making to other people.

I can infer something from what you imply. Not vice versa.

1) huge battery life( that is the first mobile issue)
2) reading without eye strains
3) fashionable feature( that means there is a market, that companies do not see, it is not only a bookwormers issue)
4) most important, stimulate people to read.
5) an always on screen with notifications, the hour, the emails, to take notes...
6) sinergies between the two screens, and develop ad hoc solutions, investing in R&D in this sector without waiting the first flexible screens, that still will be backlighted.

So I am basically interested for the reasons before, because I am a geek, and because I am a bookworm. I can insure I am not a representative for the product, as I tried to convince indirectly amazon to implement a fire HD with eink, and I hope big players as them, samsung or huawei will do. The idea is simple, and companies did not afford for their mediocrity of foreseen future scenarios, basing their not interest from the decline of use of eink in 2014, wrong assumptions and last but not least the failure of YP2, that had a wrong pricing mktg politic at the beginning for an unkwown brand, and video like that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4PwsniY-EY What matters is the community can benefit, and making the world a better place.

Barryem, I did a small video with Moon+reader, really simple also does not focus well because I used an old phone, but the screen is much better as in the others video reviews
just to show you that it works and eink is responsive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M48gwKEFlz0&app=desktop

EDIT: it looks as is not immediately responsive when i select the word, because I was looking into the camera not the real screen, so I did not centered the word as the first attempt, but in real life it works really well

Would you mind redoing the video at 720 or 1080? It's 240 and very fuzzy. Thanks.
