I'm currently halfway through Harry Turtledove's In the Presence of Mine Enemies, which neatly combines an interested in fiction on Jewish themes and Sci Fi. Apart from Joel Rosenberg's books, not something I've found often.
Turtledove almost always has a strong Jewish perspective in his Alt Hist books. Always very fascinating.

Thank you, that's good to know - that's the first Turtledove I've read, so another reason to find more.

I just finished Ken Follett's "World Without End." LOVED IT! In fact, I loved it as much as I loved "The Pillars of the Earth," the first book of the two, written back in the late 1980's. I highly recommend them to fans of medieval life in England.

Pillars of the Earth

Life is rough for a mason in the 12th century. This book is really in two parts, the first being Tom Builder's story of hardship while he seeks his dream of building a cathedral. The second part is when his talented stepson, Jack, Jack's son, (Jack Jackson, get it?) takes over construction after Tom's death. For romance fans, there is also plenty of love, lust, and passion.

World Without End

This book is more modern and character driven. It revolves around the lives of four childhood friends and follows them over the courses of their lives. Two hundred years later in the 14th century, the town has grown up around the cathedral to be a leading market town in England. The cathedral leaders are corrupt, but they are opposed by the saintly nuns. Fans of love, lust, passion, violence, poverty, and of course, repeated bouts with plague will love this book as much as I did.

World Without End was $11.99 at the Sony Bookstore.

I'm not reading it at the moment, but I'm posting because I did read an extract and was totally enamoured. Aussie Steve Toltz's A Fraction Of The Whole had been added to my list after reading the above linked-to extract (I recommend giving it a burl - it covers about the first 24 pbook pages of the book). It had been pointed out to me enthusiastically by a lusciously literary and lovely Seattle friend (even as an Aussie, I had no awareness of it prior) whose judgement I have previously rewardingly put a lot of faith in (helped by owning two of her wonderful poetry books). I couldn't find it in any of the local "new" pbook shops, and was going to buy it as an ebook (yes, it appears available), but a quick look in a secondhander the other day and it jumped off the shelves for AUS$12 (a relative bargain ). I'm looking forward to continuing it.

Cheers,
Marc
