Amazon Echo Dot review (2016): Forget the Echo. Buy this instead.

You’ll get Amazon’s Alexa assistant in a smaller, cheaper form factor

The robot assistants we were promised as children are finally ready for the home. Well, sort of. Instead of walking, talking humanoid automatons like Rosie from The Jetsons and Robby the Robot from Lost in Space, our well-spoken helpers are housed in plastic and sit on tables. They answer our questions, control our homes and sometimes tell us a story. The most ubiquitous assistant so far has been Alexa, an Amazon-powered attendant that has made the jump from a $180 tower to the $50 Dot, which isn't much bigger than a hockey puck. That sort of drop in size usually results in a loss of features. In this case, you're going to want to go tiny.

Summary

The Dot is a smaller yet just as powerful version of the Amazon Echo. What it lacks in an internal speaker system it makes up for with an audio-out port and Bluetooth connectivity. While the app and inability to route queries to a single Alexa device within close proximity of each other can be annoying, the $50 price and Alexa's usefulness make the Dot a solid option for anyone who wants to start building a connected home on the cheap.

You're right; although he was the inspiration for Will's companion.

I believe he was an evil robot in that episode.

Amazon Echo and Echo Dot update with Echo Spatial Perception starts rolling out

The Amazon Echo and 1st-gen Echo Dot are starting to receive a new software update, version 4008, that adds the much anticipated Echo Spatial Perception (ESP) feature. ESP is the feature revealed when the Echo Dot 2 was announced, that allows several Echos and Echo Dots within listening range of each other to correctly identify which device is closest to the person interacting with them. This makes it so two devices don’t respond to the same voice request.

To find your Echo's version:

True on both accounts. Robbie the Robot was from the classic 1950s SciFi film Forbidden Planet. That movie was the inspiration for a lot of 1960s and beyond SciFi TV shows. Forbidden Planet also introduced the concept of a personal communicator, although unlike the wireless version in Star Trek it was wired to their belt area of the uniforms. Great movie BTW, my favorite SciFi movie from the 1950s. I don't think the dorky robot in Lost in Space even had a name.

I'm pretty sure the Lost in Space robots "prime directive" was to incinerate that creepy, old, pedophile looking jerk who was always running around with the kid if he got to chummy. What stupid parents would let their kid hang out with that creep? LOL! As a child in the 1960s that character creeped me out considerably. I laughed when I saw their fake space monsters, but shuttered when I saw their resident creep!

I set up TODOIST on Alexa this morning, it appears to be working well.

I had experimented with TODOIST long before getting Alexa, but had abandoned it as not being useful for my use case. But now that it has Alexa integration I expect it to far surpass Alexa's native list manager.

That's cool. I don't use lists or calendars or any other such stuff on any of my devices. I have no use for them. monkey leads a simple life.
