Must have been software, I've never known a broken solder joint to fix itself.

The "broken" jack was my justification for buying a new 7 inch Fire tablet, which arrived today. I was moving some music onto the tablet and checking it out, when I tried the phone jack again. LOL I guess the phone "knew" I was meant to have a tablet, once that was accomplished, it could start working again. (Go ahead and laugh, I'm laughing at myself too.)


BTW, the phone audio quality is much better than the tablet with headphones, although the tablet will certainly be good enough to use in the car.

Using text to speech on the Fire Phone--the Kindle app--only female voices available? Am I right?

On my Fire tablet I have a whole lineup of voices and can choose male or female voices.

That's all I have on the phone too.

Thanks. It seems only the Fire tablets get the full range of text to speech voices. So now I get to walk around holding my HD6.

What irks me about the Fire phone is that the native Audible player is so much worse than the Android Audible app. I love the granularity of the speed function on the Android app; it both lets me bump up the speed gradually and home in on the perfect speed. Any book can take being speeded up by 5% to 10%, but 20% can be too much; however the slower speeds aren't an option. Similarly, the jump from 20% to 40% can be too much where 30% would be sustainable. And I always want to listen at the fastest speed consonant with enjoyment.

So true! Unless I'm immersion reading I use the audible app on my other phone.

Yes, I also find that annoying and incredible. Even the Windows phone Audible app is better, and that's saying something. I like to "mark as finished" when I am done. One would think that would be a simple matter, but no, not available to the Fire Phone.

After jumping through a LOT of hoops, I finally have FB Reader set up on my Fire Phone with a male voice for TTS (through Google Text to Speech engine). So that is a work around.

I am trying to get the Alexa app to run on my phone...no luck. I comes up with white screen with the Amazon Alexa and spinning circle that changes to a black screen with same spinning circle.

Has anyone got the app to work on their Fire Phone? Really want to get the app running to control my lights.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes, it works on my phone. I only have the Echo, nothing like a remote light switch. I've used the app to make the echo play pandora. I can use it to play Prime Music from the app.

Try rebooting your phone to see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, then try uninstalling and re-installing the app.

I haven't had any issues with the app on my Fire Phone.

Thanks for the reply, I bought the deal getting the new Dot 2nd gen and the Philips Hue light package. Wow it is really neat and was easy to install. I want to be able to turn on lights via my phone when I am away or getting home after dark. I was finally able to get Alexa to work by deleting it from my phone doing a restart of the phone and then downloading Alexa.

Thanks ever so much see my earlier post. The key was rebooting my phone and re-installing the app. Had just tried re-install of app. The light kit is awesome even this old retired lady installed it without problems. Just wanted to be able to get Alexa to turn on/off lights via her app.

This is how much I love audiobooks. I installed Google Play just to unlock the full version of Smart Audiobook Player then uninstall Play and it seems the app is still the full version. Mission Accomplished.

By the way it was easy peasy to get Google Play on the Phone.

Maybe I'll try that. Why did you take Play back off? Not having the Play store on the phone is a drawback.
