Well, yes, but part of the problem is, that Greg is on a Ubuntu-variant, and neither I nor Doitsu is.

But I guess this page will be the relevant one, though I have no idea whether Ubuntu will allow installation from outside its own repositories.

my bad, knowing you and Doitsu were on Linux I wrongly assumed Greg must be on Windows I had the grammar checker installed in Windows LO Writer within 5 minutes of downloading it

Gave up Linux when I found I was spending too much time on sysadm. That some variants are, apparently, walled gardens is testament to that. Might as well use OSX - at least everyone's Syrup of Figs version would be the same

The 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of java are two different installs (but co-exists happily on the same computer, once installed). When both are installed, you can choose which flavour to use in LibreOffice's setup. I think most, if not all, of LOs javabased plugins are 32-bit.

Thanks Kim. I appreciate the help.

@Gregg Bell: Try the stand-alone LanguageTool version. If it works, ask in an Ubuntu/LibreOffice forum for help.
Thanks Doitsu. I go to Linux Questions a lot so I'll go there first. But I thought I already tried to get the stand-alone Language Tool version and failed. (My previous post: 'did I do something wrong?')

And don't I already have Oracle (that first screenshot in post #33) or do I need a different version?

LOL This is seeming very confusing.

And I have always had issues with Java. I can hardly believe it's so successful.

Ah, thanks Kim. There's a link on that page for 'Java for Ubuntu.' That sounds very promising. (Bookmarked it.)

Thanks Red. I hear you about the time waste. Usually it's pretty interesting trying to figure these things out and they get easier as you go along. But still--they're a time waster.

Sorry, I missed that post. Have a look at the attached screenshot. You'll need to select the top-most folder (LanguageTool-3.5) and double-click languagetool.jar (marked in red). This should start the standalone version after a couple of seconds.

Since only a few LibreOffice plugins, such as LanguageTool, require Java, LibreOffice-specific Java support files are distributed in a separate libreoffice-java package file which might be missing on your machine.
(If it's already installed the package manager will let you know when you enter the above command.)

This applies mostly to Internet browser Java plugins, which are usually disabled in Linux distros.
To double-check whether your Java plugins are enabled follow these instructions.

Thanks, Doitsu, but I already did that (See post 41) and it did not start.

Ran the command and got this:

Code:
gregory@gregory-GA-A55M-DS2:~/Desktop$ sudo apt-get install libreoffice-java

Thanks. That's a relief. I actually already did what that link suggests.

On a side note I did look in Synaptic and it shows that java-common is installed.

You most likely double-clicked the .zip and then clicked the .jar file, while it was still in the archive, which does not work.
You'll need to right-click LanguageTool-3.5.zip, select Extract here and then double-click the languagetool.jar file in the unzipped top-most folder (LanguageTool-3.5).

There was a typo in my instruction, it should read:

Code:
sudo apt-get install libreoffice-java-common
Okay, thanks. I got it in LO.

I ran that new java common command. Then I downloaded the 3.5 oxt and overrode the 3.4 that was in the LO extension manager. Then I "ADDed" it to the extension manager. Then the Language Tool was in LO. And it's nice!

I couldn't get the Language Tool stand alone though. Here's what I did:

1) Downloaded the 3.5 Zip. in the Downloads folder
2) Right clicked on it and chose 'extract here'
3) Found the folder that says Language-Tool-3.5
4) Double left clicked on that (it opened)
5) Double left clicked on the brown (see 187) languagetool.jar (whatever it is)
6) That produced the screenshot 189. After that the wheel did spin as if it was trying to open something but nothing did open.

So I tried the terminal.

Code:
gregory@gregory-GA-A55M-DS2:~$ cd Downloads
gregory@gregory-GA-A55M-DS2:~/Downloads$ java -jar languagetool.jar
Error: Unable to access jarfile languagetool.jar
gregory@gregory-GA-A55M-DS2:~/Downloads$ java -jar languagetool.jar
Error: Unable to access jarfile languagetool.jar
gregory@gregory-GA-A55M-DS2:~/Downloads$
No luck.

And that's as far as I got.

P.S. You probably already know about this but I found this link:

As for the jar file issue, your file manager treated it like an archive and displayed the jar file contents instead of opening it with Java. (JAR = Java Archive)

And the java -jar languagetool.jar command didn't work because you executed it in the Downloads folder. You'll have to enter a cd command first to go to the LanguageTool-3.5 folder:

Code:
cd Downloads
cd LanguageTool-3.5
java -jar languagetool.jar
However, now that you got the LibreOffice extension working, you don't need the standalone tool, unless you want to give the Sigil plugin a try.

Yeah, I'm kind of tempted to leave well enough alone. Maybe you could answer some questions about the standalone. I'm a novelist and would like to plop my entire manuscript into the standalone. Can I do that?

And from your second thumbnail in post 53 it looks like the Standalone gives more info as to what the problem is, than does the Language Tool in LO. Is that the case?

Thanks.

You could theoretically do that, but since the standalone version only supports text files, you'd have to convert your manuscript to a text file.

The standalone version displays exactly the same information as the LibreOffice plugin, but in a different format. I.e., there's absolutely no advantage in using the standalone version. (I believe it was primarily designed for testing purposes.)

your link led me to a Language Tools Add-in for Word ==>> LanguageTool Add-in for MS Word.

I'm more likely to use it in Word. The novelty of ducking into LO to use it, would have soon become bothersome.
