Perfect. We should get married and have a brilliant 35 year long vacation

Ugh. Here we are into October, we've had what the local weather person called a "strong" cool front, and it is still miserably hot.

/I know this is nothing compared to the hurricane many have dealt/are dealing with.

That.

The thing that drives me nuts is that extraverts don't get that having a problem-solving or other discussion centered around tweaking lifehacks etc. is not the same as their "small talk" Thus I positively HATE being accused to be social based on the fact that I like and prefer talking with and to others when it leads to mutual learning.

Re the other idea: you two should at least meet and see what happens
I don't play this game anymore but it 'd be fun to see if you two would fit.

I get asked a lot if I'm not lonely, because I don't have a lot of good friends and prefer to do things on my own. But I'm not. I'm perfectly happy to potter about doing whatever on my own.

I loathe small talk. Occasionally I can't get out of going to a birthday party and most of the time I just sit there waiting until enough time has passed for me to make my escape. Luckily, if it's a family birthday party they know me well enough and don't mind me occasionally join the conversation (when I have something relevant to say about the subject) and otherwise zone out or read.

Unfortunately for me November and December isn't just busy in the store and the normal holiday time social events but there are a lot of birthdays of family and friends. So I've found that after the first week January it's a good time for me to have a "reading retreat" and recharge my batteries.

For me it doesn't help that people usually have a party on Saturday night; it's the busiest day of the week in the store and I'm usually tired and not in the mood to be social.

I wonder if MobileRead has an unusually high percentage of introverts (me too!) -- because introverts are among the biggest readers.

I agree with most of what you've said!

I'm a introvert. I rarely leave my home. All my social interaction is through the internet. I find going out and doing things exhausting. I rather stay home and read. I never get lonely. I seldom get cabin fever. My mom thinks this is bad. She begs me to just go for a ride down the street. Hubby just laughs because he knows me and he hates getting out to if he doesn't have to. We are both introverts so we just do our own thing even when we are together. He plays his Facebook game and I read or look up books. We are a good match together.

Quite possibly. Reading is a solitary, foreground activity. If you are reading, you are concentrating on what you are reading, and not paying attention to other things or interacting with other people. (I've seen posters on MR commenting that they got a dedicated eBook viewer device because it was dedicated, and would not offer the potential distractions from reading that a multi-function device would.)

I'm somewhat introverted. I can deal with social events when needed, and even enjoy them. But I'm fairly allergic to crowds and noise levels. I had to veto a suggestion made by a friend not long back that we get together at a local BBQ joint. I like BBQ, but the place was a sports bar with a variety of sporting events on big screen TVs and a high noise level. I like to be able to talk to folks I'm dining with without shouting to make myself heard.

When I'm not doing anything else, I'm reading. I tell people "I read anything that doesn't read me first, and a fair bit that does." I also say "The nice things about eBooks is that you don't call the paramedics if my To Be Read stack topples over on me!" (The TBR queue is in round thousands. If I could learn to read a different book with each eye, I might at least slow its rate of growth... )

While I like company, I don't require it, and I don't get bored when I'm by myself.

I am a strange type of introvert. When I am in a situation in which I am not comfortable, I actually change into extravert as a defense mechanism.

Dennis I understand when we moved here last year my mom took me to Crackel Barrel the noise level was off the charts! I ate quickly then retreated outside to the car to peace and quiet. Had hubby been there I could have focused on him as he's my buffer. He'll distract me or just rub my shoulder. I didn't have a panic attack as I've learned to remove myself from a situation like that when it occurs. So much noise, so many emotions, so much chaos...I had to get out of there fast.

I'm with Charlie. Why the hell should you pay for your sister's vacation? I mean, sure, great--if you were rolling in dough, and something bad had happened to sis, AND you didn't need the time to yourself, that would be one thing. But your sister made her choices--she bought a new apartment that needed fixing-up, and now she'll make those sacrifices--like the rest of us. She's already told your family that she's restricted, on that basis. I don't blame your sister--I blame your mother.

Perhaps you should suggest that MOM take your sister someplace, and that SHE pick up the tab. Right? Walk the walk, Mom, rather than just talking the talk.

YOUR vacation. Your dough. Don't let her steamroll you.

So I just got called stupid because this person made the universal sign for money. You know rub your thumb over you index and more middle finger.

I told them I don't have any money and obviously because they got mad they meant something else but when I told them what they were signing and what it meant they said I was too stupid to figure it out and left all huffy.

Some people are just too rude!

I much prefer my own company. Well, the cats are always welcome. I go to work and I come home. Rarely go out and socializing is awful. I have to see and talk to people at work all day and, really, I've had enough of other people by the time I get home.

I've already decided to go on my own. I enjoyed being on my own in June too much not to. My sister has also been dropping hints, so it's not just my mother. My father stays out of the whole discussion (he doesn't understand why I need regular alone time, he just knows I do).

And it isn't as if my sister is such stimulating company. When we're in a vacation park and we have nothing planned for the day so usually won't get up until after noon. Then she first shuffles to the bathroom for a shower, then she has breakfast. Only after that you can have a conversation with her. But then she spends most of the day behind her notebook, surfing the web. I'm expected to get food and drink and prepare dinner. She might join me for a film at night, but when she isn't behind her notebook she spends most of the time looking at her phone.

I'm going on my own and having a blast just pottering about. Since I know the apartments in the park have a nice, big oven I'm already planning for at least two cookie baking sessions.
