Maybe, but I used PCs under Windows more than 27 years and now I enjoy iMac.

Fine, but that has nothing to do with the original question, which was about he method you use to organize your ebooks, not what kind of computer you store them on.

The point is that Calibre has flexibility you're not going to get by browsing the files on your hard drive.

Case in point: Suppose you have your ebooks in a two-level folder structure, the top level for author and the second level for title. Now suppose you want to read a particular book but you can't remember who wrote it, but you do remember the title. If you have your books as files on your hard drive, you would have to browse through multiple author folders until you found it, whereas in Calibre you just sort on the Title field and scroll down alphabetically. Much easier.

Or suppose you want to read a particular book, and you don't remember the author or the title but you remember it had dinosaurs in it. If you've tagged it with "Dinosaur" in Cailbre, you simply use the tag browser to show you all the dinosaur books, then scan the shorter list until you find the right book. Try doing that in a hierarchical folder structure.

But you know what? You may not need that flexibility. If so, that's fine. Calibre isn't the One True Way to organize your books. With the flexibility of Calibre comes extra complexity and a change to your work flow, and it may not be worth the tradeoff. For instance, I would never use Calibre to organize a library of only 3 books. If you prefer to sacrifice the flexibility of Calibre for the ability to keep your ebooks in your own folder structure, there's nothing wrong with that.

@fidvo - most operating/file systems have pretty sophisticated search. If I needed to find a book with 'Night' in the title and I didn't have calibre running, or it was running against the wrong library, I would use my file manager to do a Find file, it would find the 36 books I have with 'Night' in the title in a couple of seconds.

But say I want to find all 'books' whose text contains the words 'CoCo Bond' or 'Contingent Convertible Bond'. I can find the 84 of 90+K books in my three libraries in a couple of seconds with my desktop search tool - plus the 4 emails in which they're mentioned. In Calibre I only have the QC plugin search, it would take a month of Sundays to do the search, it would only search in epubs (11 of the 84 'books' are PDFs that are 'too hard' to convert) - and it would never find the emails.

I can even add a Windows Saved Search as a book. When I 'View' an MS-SEARCH, Windows executes the search, so the results will include freshly added books, and it will take about 1-2 seconds because Windows has already indexed the content.

For me it's not a choice of using calibre OR file system based tools. I use calibre AND file system based tools, and with the Import List and especially the Drop Search Results plug-ins I can 'integrate' the two.

If I couldn't make use of non calibre tools against the data in my libraries I wouldn't be using calibre. The only constraint calibre imposes is that I don't use file system tools to add, remove, move, or rename folders and files in its libraries. I can live that

I have a large collection of eBooks on technical and artistic topics. The first much more than the second. Where are books, magazines, articles, catalogs, user manuals, drawings and other things in dozens of formats. Everything is structured by categories and subcategories. And I in any case don't want to break it.

I have created MS Access application for maintaining order and working with my library. The most flexible program is one that you wrote for himself! But on the iMac I don't want to support it.

Mac OS have Finder, Tags and Spotlight Search. Finder is not what Windows Explorer! Mac Tags help for some tasks. Spotlight Search is very quickly search by file names, file tags and file content. It is much superior to Windows indexing. But this is not enough, and even Spotlight Search doesn't work with DisckStation.

Now I'm looking for an app for macOS Sierra, which would work with the attached file of my structured library (without copying, without disturbing the structure, and without changing file names is the work of the user through the Finder).

So how does your search now about different eBook formats to be able to index the entire contents so you can do a quick search of the words inside the eBooks? I find this highly unlikely.

The file contents are indexed when they land in a directory nominated for indexing, not when the search initiated, my data drives a fully indexed. I go out of my way to ensure I have a format for which I have an iFilter.

Yes, it is. But excluding the fb2 and epub files.

In fb2 files are looking for too. The search result displays a list of html files. This is the same as convert fb2 to html, but it is better - one big file, which you can open in the browser by double-clicking.
