Aura ONE Kobo Aura One owners thread

I've only had my AuraOne for a couple of weeks but I haven't experienced any fast overnight drains at all. The biggest drop I've seen from putting it to sleep at bedtime and waking it up 12-hours later has been 1%.

I do have the Sleep Accessory function enabled because I have a home-made cobbled together sleep cover. (It's probably the ugliest cover in Kobo-land but will have to suffice until a proper 3rd-party Slimfit cover becomes available).

Apart from that, Wi-fi and every auto-sensor option have been switched off since day one. I always have the light setting at 5-15% depending on time of day. I'm not trying to say that this minimal-setup ought to be acceptable to everyone but I can easily live with it without needing to fret about when the new firmware will arrive. To be honest, I could probably live with it as-is ad infinitum.

Of course, I might feel differently if I was seriously considering sending the device back and I was running out of time.

Just in case it's helpful to anyone, these are the relevant settings in my config file, .kobo/Kobo/Kobo eReader.conf

With expectations so high for the new firmware upgrade I really hope it isn't going to be a disappointment. I can't help feeling that all these auto-sensors may continue to be battery hogs. Let's hope I'm being overly pessimistic

Using patches? Been doing that for years. GeoffR has done an excellent job of maintaining and extending Metazoa's patches and added very useful items such as alternative keyboards.

Am I waiting for the next firmware update? Yes. Am I getting anxious over the wait? No. I've seen the results of too many rush jobs over the years.

As for my personal experience with my KA1? I'm pretty happy with it as a reading device. Even with the auto-sync disable, the battery life could be better but then we're moving more pixels with less battery so hardly an unexpected result.

the KA1 should work 100% perfectly out of the box for everyone i'm sure we can all agree on that, the FACT that it doesn't implies a serious lack of quality control on Kobos part.

wisely for me i didn't buy a KA1 but if i did and it had the problems that a lot are having on this forum i would have sent it straight back for a replacement, if the replacement was also not to my satisfaction i would have got a refund as i have no need for an expensive piece of junk.

and may i add all Ereaders should work 100% perfectly out of the box without needing any tweaking or patching.

After the initial firmware update my KA1 has worked flawlessly, great buy.

Got my replacement without notice even though they said it would be a few weeks. So far the screen look's better although I had issue's with Calibre like the H20 disaster that I had it seems to not want to connect to it sometimes it will sometimes it wont and having to work around the dreaded Error communicating with device errors.

*Fixed the issue, due to the Kobo extended plug in was causing problems.

I had a couple of issues with Calibre putting files on the KA1 initially; after transferring all of my files to the reader, every time I clicked on a new book the screen would freeze and I'd have to re-start it. However, I powered it off overnight and the next morning everything was just fine =). A bit slow still but I suspect, based on other people's posts, that I might have too many files in a couple collections.
Thanks for the posts about manually fixing the auto-sync bug, that was really helpful and an easy fix! Looking forward to an official update that will fix the issue permanently.

Well, I now have a complete set. The KA1 and official sleep cover. The look and feel of the cover is nice. It has the kobo logo embossed inside and out. My KA1 fits perfectly inside the holder nice and secure. I was a little suprised that the back cover had a button overlay for the power, but it seems to be a perfect option.. the sleep functions work perfectly. The stand option works nice. The magnets hold the cover back when I read. Overall it's a home run on both the cover and reader. Although I think the cover really should be priced at 19.99$ no more no less, instead of the 59.99$

Funny thing is that in the config file on my KA1 the line 'PeriodicAutoSync=****' is missing altogether, and even funnier - although perhaps already mentioned elsewhere - is that right after I have unticked the AutoSync box and left that screen, when I immediately reenter it the box is ticked again!

Anyway, I decided to test something. I'm going to leave the AutoSynx box ticked and Wi-Fi on, but will make sure that I always set the time of day when that autosync should happen to a time that it currently is NOT. Ergo, if I've set it to 'night' and night time is approaching, I'll make sure to set it to 'day' instead. Perhaps that'll keep the thing from autosyncing... unless someone can tell me they have already tested that with negative results.

I seem to remember someone (davidfor???) saying that if a setting is missing from the .conf file it will mean the default is used and I believe the default is PeriodicAutoSync=true.

Maybe the whole crux of this bug is that the GUI Settings is simply failing to write the PeriodicAutoSync=false line when the user unchecks the box, i.e. it's perma-stuck on true unless you manually edit the file.

What was the problem? Unless you had an older version of calibre or the plugin, it should all have been OK.

Yes, for all settings, if they are missing the defaults are used. And for a lot of them, choosing the default will mean the option is not written to the config file. And that's something that is useful and annoying at the same time.

That is quite an interesting explanation, and I will certainly be trying that out after I'm done with my "set autosync to any other time than it is at this particular moment" experiment.

I'm still not positive what was going on. Everything is updated to date although I get error communicating with device when I have the KoboTouchExtended plug in enabled. I don't see the Aura one listed on it so that may be why. I just disabled it and it worked fine after. After reading awhile the only thing I noticed that is off is when turning it on the light kind of warms up and bounces about in brightness until it moves to the right one with auto brightness off although that's not rely an issue. Perfect device otherwise with the cover

I'd be interested in seeing the full error, as it might have been a coincidence. I rewrote the configuration in the main driver a little while ago and messed up part of the migration. That error hit the extended driver users the most. I fixed most of that, but there is still at least one case where it will fail. For this case, the best thing to do is remove the extended driver's configuration file.
