I bought one of these yesterday and really like the device, especially coming from a 5 year old Kobo Touch, but I'm a bit concerned about the unevenness of the backlight and a few dark splotches at the bottom of the screen. Best way I can describe it is that it makes the page look dirty. I know some people here have been through a few devices and I'm wondering how bad mine is on the spectrum and whether it's worth exchanging it for another. The fear is that the replacement will be even worse than this one. So if someone could please take a look at this picture of my screen and let me know what they think it'd be most appreciated. It's not the best picture but I think you can see the splotchiness at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks!

Who is this "we"? I am an One owner, and I'm not waiting for a crucial update. My One works perfectly, not one thing that is bugging me that could be fixed with a software update. The device is exactly as was advertised.

Well there is a few points:
- auto brightness is completely useless the way it's implemented right now
- battery drain is a huge problem and can be seriously improved

First: I've never ever found an auto brightness system that worked for me, so I didn't even look at this one... It doesn't turn on automatically either (which is a problem some people seem to have).

Battery drain is a huge problem? I can read without problem for over a week without recharging. I don't think it's a huge problem. Yes, it's shorter than my H2O, but to call it a huge problem...

People always think that if they have a problem everybody has that problem. (see what I did there?)

That's why some people can wait and aren't complaining the firmware update wasn't there yesterday and why some people are checking every 5 minutes if the firmware update has finally arrived.

Several people, including me, have reported the issue, and Kobo has acknowledged it, too.

Yes, but saying everybody is anxiously waiting for it or it's a crucial matter it's a bit excessive.

That is not helpful. Whenever I see that I have a device that doesn't suffer from an issue that many others have... I make a point to not brag about it.

No it's not at all excessive. How have you not seen the posts across multiple threads? People have said things like they can't take it on a trip, the battery dies overnight, the battery dies while reading.

Some have taken extreme steps to solve the problem. I've personally disabled every auto feature I could find, eventually had to edit a configuration file (which I shouldn't have to do). But others have had to reset their device multiple times. They have blocked wifi. They have resynced their device using the pc only (neither of which they should have to do). They have deleted their third party ebooks.

There is more than one thread asking "where is the firmware update?" How have you logged into the forum and not seen any of this??

You said "we are waiting" and didn't specify a certain group. You posted this in the Aura One owners thread and thus implied all Aura One owners were waiting for it. I'm an Aura One owner and I'm not waiting for it, and there are a few others that are also not desperately waiting for it. Thus the "we" isn't correct. Which is why I asked who the "we" were.

Do you really think this discussion is necessary? About the size of the "we"? There are plenty people so this seems an appropriate title to me.

I'm merely being precise. "Everybody" includes myself (I've got a Kobo Aura One) and that is not true. For me, editing the conf file is not a extreme measure but something usual, as the first time I've done with it has been to create the patches adapted to my needs with the tools that good people has put in this forum. Yes, a lot of people is waiting for it, I agree, but everybody? No way.

Depends on who you are including in "we". Editing config files? I do that on a regular basis for adding such items as enabling screen shots and disabling the swipe along the left edge to change brightness. Adding one more line is not a big deal to me.

Using patches? Been doing that for years. GeoffR has done an excellent job of maintaining and extending Metazoa's patches and added very useful items such as alternative keyboards.

Am I waiting for the next firmware update? Yes. Am I getting anxious over the wait? No. I've seen the results of too many rush jobs over the years.

As for my personal experience with my KA1? I'm pretty happy with it as a reading device. Even with the auto-sync disable, the battery life could be better but then we're moving more pixels with less battery so hardly an unexpected result.
