I joined at half price. I'll admit the choice of free book was uninspiring. I only read MM Romance and they had one book from that genre, it was over £3 and I already have it, paid 99p from Amazon. Anyway picked up a book for hubby.
I shouldn't have bothered to join tbh but Kobo wouldn't allow a refund. Kobo's books are just so much more expensive than Amazon, plus buying from Amazon opens me up to Audible whispersync potential later on, which is really handy for Dreamspinner books. I've already turned off auto renewal and I'll be lucky to amass the minimum points for a 2400 point book. Still live and learn ![]() |

I didn't realize my membership had expired until I bought a book this morning. But while I think it is well worth $5 to join, I don't think so at $10. Which seems silly, but there you have it. So I'll have to wait for another code.

I agree, when my membership expires I'll join again if I get a half off coupon but not if I have to pay $10 for it.

My $10 VIP membership saved me about $50 over the year, more than I originally estimated it would mainly because I hadn't allowed for the 5x bonus days (which become 10x bonus days for VIPs.)
I also have enough points left over to redeem for the next year's membership, so it is a no-brainer to join again. Most of the books I want to buy are exactly the same price at all retailers, so I might as well buy them at Kobo and get the super points, I just hope there will be more 5x bonus days. (I got an reminder email which calculated my savings at $110 over 11 months, but that figure is too high because it is based on the 10% extra discount being applied before the promo code, and the free books that I got by redeeming super points would have been cheaper if I had paid cash and used a promo code, [edit: or that I would have received half of the super points even without the VIP membership]. $50 over 12 months is a more realistic figure.) Even with the 10% off the books I buy are dearer at Kobo than Amazon. I bought Bitter Legacy by Dal Maclean yesterday. It's £5.40 on Amazon and £6.40 before the 10% discount on Kobo. With the discount it was £5.76. I had a comeback 25% discount code. That's the only reason I got it from Kobo.
Another one I want is Model Boyfreind by Lissa Kasey, again £6.40 on Kobo pre discount, £5.27 on Amazon. Both these books cost $6.99 dollars plus tax so the only reason Kobo costs more must be that on Amazon the publishers absorb the tax but on Kobo they add it on. I can't understand what else it us. If the author self publishes only then are the prices almost the same. |

How do I check when the expiry date is for my VIP membership?
I also have an email with a 50% off membership code, but I would rather apply it to my usual account. (I have a couple, cough) |

The tax might change things a bit, now that New Zealand has GST on ebooks. From what I have noticed after buying my first book with the new tax, the super points are only received for the pre-tax value of the purchase. But then the points needed to redeem a book also seem to be based on the pre-tax list price. Most of the books I buy are from big publishers who have absorbed the GST increase, and so I will get slightly fewer super points than I did before but not enough to make a big difference overall.

I used a 75% off coupon to enroll in VIP originally (when the contests were still running), and it was well worth the $2.50. My membership has expired, but I haven't gotten a membership code (where is the love Kobo?). I'll rejoin if I get one, but otherwise I'll wait.

I used a coupon for my membership last year, and it's been well worth it. I renewed at $10 without hesitation.

I buy about 50% of my books from kobo, maybe a bit more now with the VIP membership, but will see. Quite often amazon is significantly cheaper and when that happens that is where I will buy. |

I find that with coupons, I buy most of my books at Kobo and I don't even have a VIP membership! I do use the library a lot these days too. Most of the books I buy seem to be the same price at Kobo as Amazon so the coupon is all I need to convince me to buy at Kobo!
