File name of adding eBook

When calibre adds an eBook to the library, the file name does of the eBook title and author hyphenated "<title> - <author>". The title is truncated to 42 characters. Question: how to remove this limit or to keep the original file names.

You cannot control the format of the file names Calibre uses to store books in its library. They are always in a fixed format based on the book author and title. There is a sticky discussing this.

You can control the format of file names when you export books from the Calibre library

Thanks for the answer. But it's one of the reasons for not using calibre. I need a long file names.

I would like prefer not to add by copying to a library of eBooks and keep my library as it is. And exporting files does not interest me.

if you really need this, then Calibre Library Management is not compatible with this.

You can do conversions using the Calibre Command Line interface and use any file names that you like as in that case you are not loading books into the Calibre library.

Question. Can I connect my existing library of eBooks to calibre not adding (not copying them) in the calibre?

No, this is not an option supported by Calibre.

No - see Want to change folder structure or file names in the Calibre library?

When you Add (Import) books to library you can record the name or path name of the file added in a custom database column, using the GetFileName optional plugin

The simple way to think about the library is that it is a database. The database stores it's information in the way that works for the database. (Famous quote)-Don't look under the skirts. If you want a specific name for your books EXPORT.

You have two choices: Keep your files in your own structure, or use the library management features of Calibre. These two are incompatible with each other.

If you really insist on keeping your files where they are, you can still use other parts of Calibre. For instance, you can use it for conversion (import into Calibre, convert, export from Calibre, delete book from Calibre). You can also use Calibre's reader for your books (associate ebook file types with ebook-viewer). It's fairly modular like that.

I would recommend at least trying Calibre's library management features however. First, write down all the reasons why you have to keep the books in a specific folder structure. Second, import your books into Calibre, but keep the original copies as they are. Now go through your list of reasons you need the files in your folder structure, and see if Calibre can duplicate the functionality you need. (For instance, if you find a hierarchical structure familiar and easy to work with, you can set up a custom hierarchical field in Calibre and navigate it through the Tag Browser)

If it doesn't work out, well, no harm done. Delete your Calibre library and go back to doing things the way you did before.

I say this from experience. For a year I used Calibre only for conversion and reading, because I just HAD to have my books in their own directory structure. Then I decided to try things the Calibre way just as an experiment. After giving myself a couple of weeks to adjust, I never looked back.

- once I got a few basics sorted out, I got rid of the directory structure I had, and just as importantly the spreadsheet catalogues that went with them.

Calibre can find and deliver books without being limited to a Single file path that your current system uses,

which is similar to a Dead Tree Library:
1)look up the book in the card (e)Catalog
2Note the Dewey Call #
3)Locate the shelf
4)Locate the book

Calibre is a Library MANAGER
1) Use the Tag Browser to build a Search or just type it in
2)Select the book from the results
3)click Send or View

Step 1 is the same for either Calibre or Dead Tree.

Is your system that flexible?
