Hmmm the problem I can now see is that the Dot can do either of, but not both at the same time:
-BT from device to Dot
-BT from Dot to device

I wanted to go with cable so that I could BT something from other devices to the Dot connected to the amp by cable. That way I'd have at least some form of voice control, even if it's limited to next/previous/play/pause kinda commands.

Getting a male/female plug to leave permanently connected to the Dot and then connecting/disconnecting the audio cable to that would solve the wearing out issue.

But it probably wouldn't achieve your goal. Leaving the adapter plugged into the Dot will, I assume, keep the internal speaker turned off, just as keeping the cable itself plugged in does.

To be clear, if I were in your place, knowing what I do about the wear and tear on the jack, I would still just plug and unplug the cord as you suggested. I'd just be making the informed choice to increase the wear and tear for my convenience.

Ah, yes, Gaaaah...

So next idea would be a 2nd Dot in the living room one cabled to the stereo and the other one not. My kitchen is off the living room so the 2nd Dot could go at that end. Once I have the Dot, I'll cable it to the stereo and move my Echo from the bedroom to see what happens with both units in the same room...

Supposedly one of the new features coming soon is the ability for multiple units to figure out which is closest to the person speaking and have only that one respond, which might be NOT what you want if you are trying to control the stereo from the kitchen. I wonder if there is, or will be a feature where you can say something like "Alexa, play music on the living room Dot."

That's why I want to give it a try first and see what happens with 2 units at opposite ends of the room but wanting to voice control the one that's further away. I suppose I could set one up to answer to Alexa and the other to answer to Echo? Not ideal TBH. I'll see how it pans out but I might just go back to the simple idea of connecting/disconnecting the cable from the Dot to the stereo as and when and deal with things if (when) the jack wears out.

I have a half a dozen Alexa enabled devices, two Echos, one Dot, two Nucleus video intercoms, and a CoWatch, and take it from me; if the Jeff wants me to have more Alexas, he'll make them play together better. For a while there when I said "Alexa, turn off the lights" the whole house would ring with "OK"s. And when I said "Alexa, add milk to the shopping list." I'd get three gallons of milk. I don't use her to order from Amazon, I'm afraid to!

I've had to turn Alexa off on my intercoms, and that helped as the other devices are physically far enough apart to somewhat (but not completely) mitigate the problem.

We have two stereo HIFI systems and two Pure Chronos idocks in our house, none of which are bluetooth. We have ordered one of these to see if we can get them to link up to bluetooth (i don't really understand the technology myself) with my tablets. Then if that works then maybe the Dot can link to those using bluetooth too

That's conceptually the same thing as the one mpeg2 recommended above, though the one you got is a little vague on the specs.
I don't imagine you'll have any problem connecting your tablet or your Dot, but it's not impossible. We have an older, inexpensive BT receiver that works with all our phones, but the Dot will not pair to it.

What about the technology don't you understand?

It's the which end goes where bit. Audio leads (just like TV leads) baffle me. Last year we got hubby a Bluetooth receiver which he plugs into the 3.5 jack on his iPod, that enables him to connect it to a Bluetooth speaker, but what we need to do know is apparently the other way around .

I'm just trying to make the best of the speakers we already have as they are still good. I understand how to pair with Bluetooth but that's about it.

The Dot inbuilt speaker might be good enough for me and we have one Bluetooth speaker already, just trying to cover all the bases.

Ignoring for the moment that all BT devices are TECHNICALLY transceivers (both transmitters and receivers) the device your husband plugs in to his iPod is marketed as a Bluetooth TRANSMITTER, because it SENDS the sound from the ipod's headphone jack over Bluetooth to an amplified speaker somewhere which can RECEIVE the sound being sent.

You want (and you got) a Bluetooth RECEIVER, which you plug in to an amplifier or speaker (just like you'd plug in a tape deck or a CD player or an iPod...) and it RECEIVES the Bluetooth sound that some Bluetooth TRANSMITTER is sending out.

Some devices, like my smartphone, and an Echo or Dot, can do both functions, either acting as speaker, or sending sound to another speaker.
But often, as Yolina said at the top of this page, they can't do both at the same time.

Finally tried Audible with the Echo. I like it! Usually can't use it, though, other people get annoyed.

Cancelled my pre-order for the Dot. I will wait for a Black Friday sale, if none, will order for Christmas delivery.

I use mine for Audible too.

I'm also waiting for Black Friday sales for the Dot. Then I plan to get 2 or 3 of them.
