No, I won't but a new Kindle. My current one works perfectly fine so i will stick with it.

As long a we are all contemplating the prospective purchases let us remember what we slept through in economics:

Quote:
For those of us who still have our jobs, who still have a few nickels to rub together, we should be buying like mad.

Look, we're faced with John Maynard Keynes called "the paradox of thrift." If everyone is cheap and thrifty and doesn't spend, the economy slumps and everyone is poorer, not richer.

This really isn't rocket science. It's part of what caused the Great Depression.

Actually, borrowing within one's means is certainly provident. It's borrowing when you can't afford to pay it back that causes the problems we face today in the financial crisis.

My views mirror desertgrandma's. Any new Kindle would have to be cheap, and really compelling to get me to switch. I'm very happy with my current Kindle.

I'm happy with my kindle as it is. I really never had the oops button issue, maybe because I'd read of the problems before hand, maybe because of the way I hold it, but it works for me.

As for content, I haven't had any problems with what I've added to the Amazon books. My pdf's read exactly the same on the kindle as they did on screen, doc's I've stored on it for work, are fine, and with feedbooks, I get all my feeds completely readable.

I'm fully satisfied with the one I have.

I don't know about Kindle owners, and I'm not going to criticize the Kindle 1.0 or 2.0. I would say I'm happy for possibly the next couple of years with my Sony 700. I'm not really interested in getting online in a second to buy something on impulse. I like where I am right now. My reader serves my purposes. My biggest gripe is with the market and prices of reading material.

How many of you Kindle owners will buy one right away? How many non-Kindle owners will? Why or why not?

I will buy a second one for my wife as soon as it shows. She uses my old Sony 500 but the selection is way too limited on that. As far as formats, Kindle already has more content for it than anything else so I could care less if it reads all sorts of formats. As long as I can read Kindle Store and .txt, I am good.

I suppose if you have some special need for business or personal content in a specific format(s) that might be a factor but sure as heck not for general reading. For that, it is fine as is.

I find the Kindle helps me to stop impulse buying. I download the free sample chapters on a whim but I don't buy anything until I've read it. At that point I'm pretty sure I really want it and will finish it. Before, I used to buy a lot more books I didn't end up liking enough to finish. I would try to plan ahead for what I would want to read and buy several books at a time. I find I'm reading more than ever now and spending less on books.

MY wife just handed me an article from a local paper we get, The St. Petersburg Times about the Kindle. There is a side bar to the article which says:

"Amazon.com will introduce the next generation of its popular Kindle reader in New York City on Feb 9."

(emphasis mine) Interesting the next line they say no details have been given. I guess we can only wait and see what happens.

I do the same. I've skipped any number of books because of poorly written samples. Even worse, if I download the sample and it's nothing more than the front matter, advertisements from the publisher and so on, I'll delete it without a second thought. If they're going to bother making a sample, at least make it a real sample of the book.

Back on topic: I think the only thing that might eventually get me to upgrade is a much (and I do mean much) better screen for the same price. I'll probably even wait for decent quality color screens before I move on from my Kindle 1.0.

I likely won't be switching for years.

Yeah, but the blogs are whispering it is a 2nd version of the Kindle from what I've read.

Nate, it isn't that there aren't ways to convert between formats and Kovid's Calibre is great. (BTW, I don't want to convert from ePub to Mobi; if anything, it would be the opposite.)

Rather, it is that I do not wish to support Amazon's attempt to monopolize the publishing industry, especially the ebook portion of it. Consequently, I will not buy pbooks or ebooks from Amazon or Amazon-controlled/owned companies. I would rather pay a little more to someone else or simply pass on a book.

When Amazon sells a Kindle it really is attempting to lock the buyer into buying books only from Amazon. Yes, members of MR know that there are other options, but I'm willing to bet that most Kindle buyers believe they are able to buy only from Amazon. I don't want to add to Amazon's sales statistics which Amazon will use to browbeat publishers to do what Amazon wants.

I think you are underestimating the intelligence of Kindle buyers. Some, at the very beginning, may think that, but a person who buys a Kindle is first and foremost a reader. (with the exception of those who buy it just because you-know-who has one)
That being said, it doesn't take any of us long to find mobileread, feedbooks, fictionwise, amazon discussions page, you name it. We're not Amazon's robots.
