True, but the way that one reads books on the two systems is different, hence it's useful to make the distinction. Nobody is claiming that there are ads on Google Books, which is what the original thread title claimed. I am of course aware that Google Books has links to commercial ebooks on Google Play, but nonetheless the two are distinct.

I see now what you mean. That there is no ads on Google Books is probably more for legal reasons than anything else. I wouldn't be surprised if they start showing ads on Google Books.

"ON Google Books," as in on the web site, or IN the books available though Google Books?

I have no idea what this thread is supposedly about any more.

It's really seeming like a total non-issue, but I may just be missing something.

The original claim was that the user was getting ads/recs when opening a Google Play-purchased epub (a bible) in the Android Google Play Books app.

No one has yet been able to duplicate said behavior.

It's possible the OP got a buggy Play Books app version that has since been fixed in the latest versions that are now being rolled out. Or it could be something specific to the book he bought.

I think the thread title needs a question mark added to the end, myself.

It is also possible the publisher put ads in the ONE book that the OP saw them in.
So like the rest of you, I think it was a one off thing.

I've seen adds in ePubs from several less than reputable publishers. These weren't distributed by Google Books/Play Store, but it is just a matter of time before that happens.

My guess is that we'll see it in books from SmashWords, before Google Books/Play Store.

I meant the website and while you are using the website to read through a book. Books avaliable for reading offline or in anything other than the website should not have ads (either free or paid for).

Project Gutenberg doesn't really show ads on their website, but they make sure that their donate button is very prominent on every page - to me that is still advertisement whether it is for a good cause or not.
