I finished Hunted by James A Gardner. A good 4th book in the League of Peoples SF series. My enjoyment of this series isn't limited to it being a solid go to when I'm looking for something good to read next. Moved onto The Unseen in the Krew of Hunters series by Heather Graham. |

Palace of Justice is the second book in a series (Aristide Ravel), and is set in the time of the French Revolution; I wasn't too impressed with the first book (IIRC; it's been a while since I read it) but I enjoyed this one a lot. And Monday the Rabbi Took Off was wonderful, with Rabbi Small in a different setting than usual. And here is my ambitious next-up list: The Girl in the Gatehouse by Julie Klassen, The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow by Joyce Magnin, Murder Passes the Buck by Deb Baker, and A Regimental Murder by Ashley Gardner. Also, I want to read The Woman in White, by Wilkie Collins, in the background.

I've been reading them for several years now, but I've been rationing them out to last longer.

I must re-read them. It must be at least 10 years since I last did so (which has the benefit that I've forgotten all the plots!).

They've been an enjoyment for me, to be sure. The mysteries themselves can be a bit transparent at times, but I enjoy the characters and the period (something I understand Pargeter was quite thorough about portraying accurately) more than enough to make up for it. They're pleasant distractions for me.

I am reading A Darker Shade of Magic by Victoria (V.E.) Schwab. I love the different dimensions of it all and the darkness of it. Her characters are well-drawn, I think.

Had to abandon another book: Ice Song by Kirsten Imani Kasai. I bought this for $1.99 from Amazon. The premise is interesting enough, and the world-building is decent, but this book could have benefited from a good editor. The plot holes are glaring; and the writing, though promising, just didn't grab me enough to continue beyond 37%. So... I switched to The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector’s Story by Hyeonseo Lee. I am 78% through it, and I like this one! |
