New Fire OS Update?

There is 2 separate updates.

I think that the 5.3.3.1 on Wikipedia is a typo. According to Amazon's Fire & Kindle Software Updates page, the latest version available for 4th and 5th generation tablets is 5.3.1.0 and the new 6th generation Fire HD 8 runs an incremental update: 5.3.1.1.

Amazon has promised Fire OS 5.4 with Alexa by the end of the year.

That is what my Neighbors Fire 8" has 5.3.1.1 BUT that's not what he had right out the box.... he had to do a lot of updates! Out of box was 5.0 is that normal for all the 8"??

That is probably normal. It makes sense to have the factory use the same OS version over the entire run for a particular model, rather than constantly changing their procedure to update to the latest greatest OS version. Constantly changing the procedures would cost time and money. Much easier to install whatever OS version is available when they first go into production and just push the updates to the devices over the air. I know my Fire HD 6 arrived with a much older version of the OS than was available, and then it took a very long time for it to finish updating to the latest OS version. It updated incrementally rather than all at once.
