I'm not faulting him at all. Just wanting to know more about this rule that I've never heard of or read.

In reference to books in the erotica genre, here's a post from Alex dated 03 Dec 2014 and found in the Announcements forum. My marching orders from green mods are no links to erotica.

Let me know if y'all have further questions about this - thanks, tm

MobileRead Guideline Refinements

Keeping things family- and work-friendly

TL;DR: It is not permitted to post sexually explicit or erotic content.

We pride ourselves on being a family- and work-friendly community. Children visit this forum and, for better or worse, our conduct sets an example that can either foster or hinder a life-long interest in reading books. We also want parents to feel confident that this community is safe for their children to visit.

It goes without saying that flaming, cursing and trolling are not acceptable.

What's more difficult to define is where we draw the line with explicit content. It's been our policy for as long as I remember that users must not publish images or video that contain adult content, sexually oriented material, or might otherwise be considered offensive. Also sexual connotations or references have no place in this community. Yet, as of late we've noticed a trend among a handful of authors presenting literary works that would clearly fall under the rule of not being family-friendly. By clearly I mean the kind of content that you wouldn't want a child to see or that you might be embarrassed to view at work in front of colleagues. This could be a cover image, a book summary, or even endorsing links to said book. We will not accept this type of content any longer and reserve the right to remove posts that we deem inappropriate (yup, it's a judgment call).

Examples of related content not permitted include, but are not limited to, nudity, pornography, extreme profanity, erotica, sexually suggestive or explicit text.

Trust me this is not an expression of conservative views. Rather, it's about what we consider inappropriate when welcoming a broad audience including children from all over the world. Overall, I'm just repeating what I guess everyone already knows and it shouldn't affect much of our community.
* emphasis mine

Please see my explanation above.

No need to be sorry about asking. This is what I've been told by higher mods. I even got caught doing it once, not knowing it was a no no.

Anyway, MobileRead is a family and work friendly website, and erotica is not a good fit for us.

People need to remember that MobileRead is not a public or government entity. If it were, and were in a country where there are free speech rights, then it possibly would be required to allow things like erotica to be posted. But MobileRead is a private organization owned and operated by people who are within their rights to jolly well allow and ban whatever things that they wish to be allowed or banned.

Thanks TM. Since erotica and erotic romance are often classified together and sometimes used interchangeably I'm just surprised this is the first time I've seen reference to this rule (and surprised it hasn't made it into the posting guidelines) since deals to books that could run afoul of this are routinely posted in the Romance thread. I just hadn't run across it before which was why I asked.

FREE -- The Poverty of Nations -- Barry Asmus, et al/ Ray Porter --> 12.3 hrs/ R-4.4

Quote:
The Poverty of Nations: A Sustainable Solutions

The whole world has a stake in the war against poverty and leaders across the globe are looking for a permanent solution. That’s why economist Barry Asmus and theologian Wayne Grudem have teamed up to outline a robust proposal for fighting poverty on a national level. These two experts believe the solution lies in a comprehensive development plan that integrates the principles of a free market system with the Bible’s teachings on social ethics. Speaking to the importance of personal freedom, the rule of law, private property, moral virtue, and education, this book offers a clear path for promoting economic prosperity and safeguarding a country’s long-term stability—a sustainable solution for a world looking for the way forward.

Quote:
The Last Don --> Godfather Series (book 3 of 3)

Whispersync: no deals at this time

The Last Don is Mario Puzo at his finest - a masterful saga of the last great American crime family, the Clericuzios, and their powerful reach into Hollywood and Las Vegas.

Domenico Clericuzio is a wise and ruthless man who, in his old age, is determined to create a life free from criminal activities for his grandchildren. But as he strives to establish his heirs in legitimate society, secrets from his family's past spark a vicious and bloody war between cousins....

Tantor has updated their freebie for October. if you're interested in getting the highly appropriate "The Best of Edgar Allan Poe" you can get it free here. While we've had some free Poe in past years we've never gotten this particular version. I compared this with other freebies and while it has the usual suspects it also has some titles that were not in the other versions.

Quote:
The name Edgar Allan Poe conjures up thoughts of hearts beating long after their owners are dead, of disease and plague amid wealth, and of love that extends beyond the grave. The richness of Poe's writing, however, includes much more than horror, loss, and death.

Poe's stories teem with irony and black humor, in addition to plot twists and surprise endings. Living by their own rules and charged with passion, Poe's characters are instantly recognizable—even though we may be appalled by their actions, we understand their motivations.

This collection contains eleven of Poe's best stories. They are "The Fall of the House of Usher," "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Premature Burial," "Ligeia," "The Black Cat," "The Oval Portrait," "Berenice," "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar," and "The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether."
Enjoy!

I found a new freebie over at Audible; it's a short story collection from LA Theatre Works. If you're interested in "Five Short Stories by Women" you can get it free here.

Quote:
L.A. Theatre Works presents Five Short Stories by Women, a quintet of tales from some of America's most distinguished female authors.

Joyce Carol Oates' Life after High School takes us to a time in the late 1950s, to South Lebanon High School, and shows us the lives of three people at a time of self-discovery. Read by Sarah Drew.

In The Banks of the Vistula by Rebecca Lee, an ambitious student wants desperately to make her mark in a linguistics class. Read by Emily Bergl. Published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, © 2013.

Never Marry a Mexican by Sandra Cisneros is the story of a woman named Clemencia who remembers her family, her parents' culture, and her affair with a married man. Read by Rita Moreno.

What do you say to someone on their deathbed? In the Cemetery Where Al Jolson is Buried by Amy Hempel addresses this question head-on, as a young woman describes her visit to a dying friend. Read by Lynn Collins.

Once Upon a Time by Nadine Gordimer is anything but a fairy tale. It's more of a dystopian fantasy - with overtones of the racial inequality in Gordimer's native South Africa. Read by Alex Kingston.
No idea how long it'll be free so if you're interested don't delay.

Enjoy!

$1.95 -- Turn of the Screw -- Henry James/ E Thompson, et al --> 4.7 hrs/ R-4.0 --> brit classic

Quote:
The Turn of the Screw

Whispersync: Audible ($1.99) | Kindle (free)

Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Emmy winner Emma Thompson lends her immense talent and experienced voice to Henry James' Gothic ghost tale, The Turn of the Screw.

When a governess is hired to care for two children at a British country estate, she begins to sense an otherworldly presence around the grounds. Are they really ghosts she's seeing? Or is something far more sinister at work?

Having performed in films based on some of the greatest works in literature - including Sense and Sensibility, Howards End, Much Ado About Nothing, and Henry V - Thompson is no stranger to the classics, and she lends a graceful eloquence to this moody, macabre story. Joined by listener favorite Richard Armitage, who performs the prologue, Thompson reinvigorates this psychological thriller of life, death, evil, and the unknown.
