Under the Eagle is the first in the Cato and Macro series by Simon Scarrow. I wasn't quite sure whether to classify this as historical fiction or as a historical thriller and put it in the mystery/thriller thread but eventually ended up here. When I first started buying titles in this series in DTB while in the UK on business trips, they were sometimes found in the "crime" (UK-speak for mystery ) section, which is how I found the series to start with, but eventually they moved to either more general fiction, or military fiction if the bookstore was big enough to sort that out. In any case, this is a great series (IMO) that I have enjoyed sharing with my son. (Even giving him nightmares when he was very young about the druids in one of the books...hmmmm...) I think the series is not very well known in the US, but I have the impression it is a big deal in the UK - someone UK-ish could comment, perhaps.

Anyway, Under the Eagle has dropped to $0.99 at Kindle US and other US retailers. Be careful - there are two versions of this - a Headline version that is the $0.99 one, and a St. Martin's press that is $9.99. You don't want to make that mistake!

Spoiler:
Quote:
UNDER THE EAGLE is the gripping first novel in Simon Scarrow's bestselling EAGLES OF THE EMPIRE series. A must read for fans of Bernard Cornwell.

It is AD 42, and Quintus Licinius Cato has just arrived in Germany as a new recruit to the Second Legion, the toughest in the Roman army. If adjusting to the rigours of military life isn't difficult enough for the bookish young man, he also has to contend with the disgust of his colleagues when, because of his imperial connections, he is appointed a rank above them. As second-in-command to Macro, the fearless, battle-scarred centurion who leads them, Cato has more to prove than most in the adventures that lie ahead.
Then the men discover that the army's next campaign will take them to a land of unparalleled barbarity - Britain. After the long march west, Cato and Macro undertake a special mission that will thrust them headlong into a conspiracy that threatens to topple the Emperor himself...

Bargain @ $1.99 from Steerforth's Pushkin Press imprint (couponable @ Kobo, price available in at least North America; these things are regularly around $10+ CAD), which specializes in bringing modern classic international literature into English translation:

The Brethren by the late French author Robert Merle (Wikipedia), the 1st novel in his acclaimed and highly popular Fortune de France series of historical novels (which has its own Wikipedia entry), set in the 1500-1600s and following the political, religious, and war developments through the eyes of fictitious characters.

Consisting of 13 books written across 26 years, the adventure-filled epic Fortunes of France is one of France's best-loved historical fiction series. Never before published in English, book one, The Brethren, makes its debut in the US in the spring of 2015, followed in the fall by book two, City of Wisdom and Blood.

Two veteran soldiers retire to a castle in the wildly beautiful Périgord of sixteenth century France. But the country is descending into chaos, plagued by religious strife, famine, pestilence, bands of robbers... and, of course, the English.

In the course of their story we are introduced to a slew of vivid characters, including the fiery Isabelle, mistress of the castle, refusing to renounce her religious beliefs despite great pressure; the petty and meal-mouthed Francois, unlikely heir to the estate; the brave and loyal Jonas who lives in a cave and keeps a wolf as a pet; the swaggering soldier Cabusse; the outrageously superstitious Maligou, and Sarrazine, who once roamed as part of a wild gypsy band.

A sprawling, earthy tale of violence and lust, love and death, political intrigue and dazzling philosophical debate, The Brethren is the first step in an engrossing saga to rival Dumas, Flashman and Game of Thrones.

I'm still waiting for 'Malevil' to come out as an ebook.

A post-apocalyptic epic from the 1970s.

A classic.

Sarah Waters' The Night Watch is $1.99 at various US retailers at the moment.
Amazon US Kobo

This was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize.

Quote:
“[A] wonderful novel…Waters is almost Dickensian in her wealth of description and depth of character.”—Chicago Tribune

Moving back through the 1940s, through air raids, blacked-out streets, illicit partying, and sexual adventure, to end with its beginning in 1941, The Night Watch tells the story of four Londoners—three women and a young man with a past—whose lives, and those of their friends and lovers, connect in tragedy, stunning surprise and exquisite turns, only to change irreversibly in the shadow of a grand historical event.

Carol Birch's novel Jamrach's Menagerie is $1.99 at multiple US retailers including Amazon.

Quote:
SHORTLISTED for the 2011 Man Booker Prize for Fiction

A thrilling and powerful novel about a young boy lured to sea by the promise of adventure and reward, with echoes of Great Expectations, Moby-Dick, and The Voyage of the Narwhal.

Jamrach’s Menagerie tells the story of a nineteenth-century street urchin named Jaffy Brown. Following an incident with an escaped tiger, Jaffy goes to work for Mr. Charles Jamrach, the famed importer of exotic animals, alongside Tim, a good but sometimes spitefully competitive boy. Thus begins a long, close friendship fraught with ambiguity and rivalry.

Mr. Jamrach recruits the two boys to capture a fabled dragon during the course of a three-year whaling expedi*tion. Onboard, Jaffy and Tim enjoy the rough brotherhood of sailors and the brutal art of whale hunting. They even succeed in catching the reptilian beast.

But when the ship’s whaling venture falls short of expecta*tions, the crew begins to regard the dragon—seething with feral power in its cage—as bad luck, a feeling that is cruelly reinforced when a violent storm sinks the ship.

Drifting across an increasingly hallucinatory ocean, the sur*vivors, including Jaffy and Tim, are forced to confront their own place in the animal kingdom. Masterfully told, wildly atmospheric, and thundering with tension, Jamrach’s Mena*gerie is a truly haunting novel about friendship, sacrifice, and survival.
I read this one a few years back and recommend it highly.

Best Punctuation Book Period

Yes, the book is titled:
The Best Punctuation Book, Period
It is written by June Casagrande and is easy to read.
This 256 page tomb is now at:
Barnes & Noble
for $1.99
instead of the $10.78 in paperback.

If you need one, this is a good reference for a decent price. (My opinion.)
