I hate to hear the news.

But we all need to realize that there is no free lunch. A company like Google must make money somehow in order to pay for what they do. Most people would balk at having to pay a subscription fee for the privilege of viewing the books. Putting up advertisements is a way to get the income to do what they do without customers paying for the product directly, so not feeling the "pinch."

An analogy is television. Programming and other things cost money. Television networks and stations must have a source of income. Few people would be willing to pay directly for over-the-air (e.g., local broadcast channels) TV, but they have been willing to tolerate the annoyance of advertisements, so that they can get the product "free."

But, again, there's no free lunch. The price that companies pay to advertise on TV, radio, the Internet, or wherever gets passed on to the consumers. It has to. But it is a price to the consumers that they are willing to bear, because it is sort of invisible to them. They don't have to feel the "pinch."

Now where I do get incensed is when I'm paying my money to companies for their products and I still am forced to be assaulted with advertising from them or some third party. Case in point: I had to place an order in the past few days on Walmart.com. But seemingly every time that I navigated to a page on their website an annoying video, partially obstructing the view of things that I wanted to see, popped up and started playing. It was for Tidy Cat. I got so angry that I told myself that I was never going to buy that brand of kitty litter again if I could help it (yes, I do own a cat)! Unfortunately, I do feel that, in my circumstances, I do have to shop at Walmart online, or I would drop them, too.

Umm Google Play Books is a store where you buy books just like Amazon/Kindle, Kobo, B&N/Nook, etc.

Yeah, that's the only thing that surprises me about this, assuming it's true.

Much like Amazon sold Kindles cheap to get people to buy books from them, I think Google would want to keep ads out of their book app for the same reason. I'm fine with the services Google gives me in exchange for my eyeballs, usually, but I'd think they'd want to make their book sales gateway app as enticing as possible.

Note: The OP said they were in ONE book he bought. Until we get more data, let's not make any assumptions.
Andy,
Since you have the updated version, can you go grab a Google book?
I am assuming if this is across the board, price won't matter.

That faux pas comes from the fact that I rarely buy a book from Google Play. On the other hand, I often go to books.Google.com/books to see if they have a digital book in the public domain that I'm looking for. I had a picture in my head that they were somehow going to put ads on the webpages pertaining to those books (which they don't now).

If I had read the O.P. that would have prevented my assumption, too.

If Google Play starts to assault us with ads while we're trying to shop with them, then what I said about Walmart.com holds true with them, too.

To be fair, the thread title is somewhat misleading. The OP is having problems with Google Play books - the commercial bookstore - not with Google Books, which is the entirely unrelated book scanning system. I have amended the thread title accordingly.

Well, I'm confused. The article linked in the op repeatedly refers to Google books, but also it says nothing about ads appearing IN book or while reading, it talks about the "discover" feature, which is a totally separate area of the Play Books app.

I went to check my Google play books app, and the only way I even found the Discover feature was because I left "my library" and went looking for it. No intrusion there. I then skipped to the very end of a book in my library and, after the last page, there is a rate and share page, with one related recommenation ad on it, much like on Kindle.

Maybe the op can post a screen shot of the issue they are seeing?

Last edited by ApK; 10-03-2016 at 11:07 AM. Reason: "article" linked in the op, not "thread"

Why are you even bringing Google Books (books.google.com) into it? You sound like there is a difference. Guess what store books.google.com is using when you buy a book from there? When you use books.google.com, you are also agreeing to the terms of the google play books terms, because that is what you use to pay for services on books.google.com.
