Open Road media puts out a daily "Early Bird Deal" email that always (so far at least) has a freebie at the end. So far, every single freebie I have seen, over multiple years of checking this email pretty regularly, is their edition of a PD title, but today is different.

Today the freebie is a box set of the first four titles in the "Edge of the Heat" series by Lisa Ladew. I'm not quite sure what Open Road's relationship with this box set is - they are not listed on the Amazon site as the publisher, but the info on the freebie came as part of their normal daily email, so I'm assuming they are involved in some way and this is not a self-pub. YMMV...

These are definitely for today (Sunday) only, and I believe this is US only.

Have you tried a different browser? Chrome doesn't work for me, I have to use Firefox.

Then you click on "Play Now" (the last activity was spot the difference) and that usually opens another window. Then once you've done the activity, there's a pop-up box on the original Facebook screen for you to chose the option that you've completed it.

I am not on Facebook at all, so I don't know if this the way Facebook usually behaves. And while I don't google the answers to the regular activities, I do confess I always have to solve the spot the difference before saying I did. Most are easy, but there have been a few it took me a while Not sure why I view that as a challenge I have to get right and don't care about the series names and such. I have a strange brain.

I use Firefox and when I click the Facebook activites button I go right there. There is an annoying pop-up type thing wanting you to log into Facebook but you can click "not now" and it'll go away. You can do the activity without being logged in or having an account.

I'd definitely try another browser if you can't get there from the MyRewards page.

It looks like Harlequin may not be offering as many Avon titles as before. It took over a week for Sarah MacLean's latest release to be available for purchase and the Laura Lee Guhrke and Lenora Bell releases from the end of August still show up as coming soon. The new Jill Shalvis and Tessa Dare books that will be released tomorrow are not even available on the website. I've been amassing points specifically to buy Avon titles and now I'm not sure if I'll even be able to anymore.

They've always been slow to add some Avon title (& some of their own Carina titles) so don't give up hope totally. I've been waiting for them to add an Avon title as well and still hope they'll get it (I'm not in a hurry at this point).

It is odd as the next book (novella) in the Shalvis series is there. I know with their own MIRA titles which release on the last Tuesday of the month you sometimes had to wait until they update their site on the first of the month for them to become available to buy. At least that's how it was on the old site. So if it is not available tomorrow it may be there on the first. I think their various imprints don't always communicate well with each other.

I downloaded a free book which was self-published. When I added it to Calibre, the metadata came pre-rated with 5 stars

Is this some new trend with self-published authors? I find it very off putting

I've gotten them from an actual publisher that way a few times too. Can't remember who, but I think it was Samhain or Baen.

Not sure if it's intentional or if it's the way Calibre reads some unknown metadata field and places the info in its rating field erroneously as rating isn't an official metadata field (at least not for Dublin Core).

I've seen it happen since I started using Calibre, about five years ago now. I always manually remove all stars on pre-rated books and ignore them, especially since I have noticed that the more stars they have, the less likely they are to have been written with skill and care...
