I feel pretty silly cause I cannot seem to figure out where to do this.
no where in the User CP section does it talk about private messaging.

Under Edit Option.. the closes I see something like this is "Enable Visitor Messaging" and it is already enabled.

I've already looked at FAQs but to noavail.
My account is new so not sure if this is why.

I managed to get on IRC channel but I know this is not what you were talking about.

Sorry, I don't know what's happening. For me, the PM options are on the page as the Visitor Messaging. I have had them enable far to long to know if I needed to do anything else.

Except that a large number of the image requests have come from people making their first posts. Unless they are all waiting a few days before the request. Or is there a confirmation step needed?

perhaps it is a probational period and I just haven't been fully activated yet.
It's unfortunate as I was hoping to fix the device before I go on vacation for 2 weeks. this will just have to wait.
I'll check back in a couple weeks and perhaps try to send a PM to Davidfor if the option is there to do so.

Well I'm happy to report that I was issued a replacement for my bricked Kobo WiFi device. They sent me a Kobo Touch since they no longer make the Kobo WiFi. It's bitter sweet as I really liked the Kobo Wifi, but I'm also very appreciative of Rakuten/Kobo for sending me a replacement even after having owned the original device for over 5 years (to be fair though, my device was like new). Either way, thanks for the help and support, you guys and gals are awesome! And best of luck if you try to get your device replaced.

OMG waaay faster. I like it, but damn this thing is prone to fingerprints.
Also, if anyone would like a copy of my transcript with Kobo/Rakuten support with the hopes that they can also get a replacement LMK and I'll try to email/DM it to you.
