For clarification purposes: we are talking about Google Play Books, correct? On my Android device, I'm not seeing the ads, and I have no Recommendations preference setting. The techcrunch article in the OP suggests the feature is called "Discover". And that it's a new "section" in the Google Books application.

Just making sure we're all on the same page, as Google Books and Google Play Books are two different things.

My Android Google Play Books application is listed as version 3.9.49, by the way.

I'm on my Nexus 7 and I'm referring to Settings on the library page for Google Play Books.

I don't know if unchecking the box would fix the problem, but I figure it can't hurt.

I'm on a Nexus 7 and I don't have a Recommendation setting in the general library settings. Not that I can find anyway. Newer version?

Also: the ads the OP is describing don't sound like the same thing that the techcrunch article is describing. Could all be tied together, I suppose, but a new "Discover" section in the application doesn't sound like inbook ads to me.

Huh. I'm running the latest version of Google Play Books on my Nexus 7 2013, which I'm pretty sure is the one you have. It's the last choice under Settings, after the ones for using the volume button for page turns, page effects, and so forth.

No clue.

We're definitely in the same place, but the last choice I have on that Settings page is the Notification setting to be notified when new books are available from authors in my library. They must be rolling out new versions little by little, or something.

I confess that I am slightly disappointed that the suggestions were all bible related. It would have been fun to have ads for Torah, Quran, Richard Dawkins etc. Or something similar to Janet Kagan's Faith of the Month Club

It is a recent update, and I just bought that book a few days ago. I checked one of my public domain texts and there is no ad on it. Makes me wonder if this is something they are putting on new books or just books purchased through Google Play Books. I uploaded the public domain book that does not have ads on it using their app. Definitely won't buy any more books from Google.

I'm not seeing that option on the updated app. The only thing close is to uncheck in Notifications is for when new books available from authors in your library, which has been unchecked in my settings for awhile.

Google Books Android app on Lollipop on my LG phone. The web/browser app doesn't have ads, at least not yet. They may be slowly rolling this out to Android. On updated Android apps you will find "Discover" on the drop down window on the left in Google Books, which should mean that is the updated app version I'm talking about. And again, not showing up on my own uploaded books, just on purchased books bought in Google Play Books.

I don't have any purchased books from Google play but do have some free books downloaded from Google and have not seen any ads. Play Books android app, v 3.10.23 (09/23/2016). Nothing in settings.

Could be a new feature they are randomly testing. Anyway, I'm not going to buy a book from them just to find out :O

Thanks. That's definitely newer than mine. I do have several ebooks purchased through Google Play in my library, so I should be able to tell if it happens with previously purchased books, or if I need to buy a new one for it to happen (once my app updates, of course).

I just sent them feedback on the app to let them know I don't appreciate ads in my purchased books using their app. Really not much of an incentive to buy books from Google

Please let me know if the ads show up for you. It was so strange the first few times I saw the ad/recommendation it didn't click that they had inserted an ad/suggestion within the book. By about about the 4th time I had to click on the page to remove the ad I went to see if there had been an update or something, that is when I found the new "Discover" feature and update.
Guess I now need an ad-blocker for use within Google Books

Open the Google Books app in settings>apps. See if there are any permissions listed. If the permission for discovery is there, you might be able to turn it off or deny it.
