Just finished "Landfall" by Stephen Baxter, a book containing three novellas set in the universe of his "Flood" and "Ark" novels. Very good, but (obviously!) only if you've read the original books first. The novellas are set respectively 400, 1000 and 10,000 years after the end of "Ark" and show the development of human society into the far future. Very good.

I'm with Harry on this, it's one of my all time favourites.

Meanwhile, I finished up a re-read (via Audible, mostly) of Wen Spencer's Wood Sprites. As with pretty much all her books, the quirkiness really works well for me and I quite enjoyed it. (This is #4 in her Elfhome series, but can actually be read standalone.)

Which is clearly derivative - obviously. But quite fun.

So much so that I'm going straight on to the next one - Chaos and Amber.

Started reading the September Book Club selection, Heart of Darkness. Abandoned. Life is too short and my reading time too precious to subject myself to this.

I need something to flush that out of my brain. Going with a Connie Willis book, To Say Nothing of the Dog.

It worked wonders when I was looking for a similar purge.

Good to hear! This is the first book of hers I've read, having just discovered her through the (excellent) Women of Futures Past collection that was in the latest Baen Bundle. So far, it's starting well.

I managed to finish Lords and Ladies at the end of August and then nothing until this week.

This week I have managed to read an amateur radio study guide (going for my technician license), a short article by The Passive Guy on publishing contracts (I don't write but for some reason I am hooked on following indie writing news), and then Moon over Soho book 2 of the Peter Grant/Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch which was excellent. If you haven't started the Peter Grant/Rivers of London series and like police procedurals, mysteries, or urban fantasy I highly recommend it. The first book is nominated for October's book club as well if you need some incentive to try it.

Unless I have a record week next week this will be the lowest page count for a month that I have had since I started keeping track.

Next up: Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. He guest lectured for Brandon Sanderson's writing class and I want to try this out. I also have Whispers Under Ground, book 3 of the Peter Grant series, reserved at my library.

Finished The Sign by Raymond Khoury . In Antarctica, a scientific expedition drops anchor to witness the cataclysmic breakup of an ice shelf. As investigative reporter Gracie Logan begins her live news feed, a massive, shimmering ball of light suddenly appears in the sky, shapeshifting and enveloping the ship before disappearing as mysteriously as it arrived...

Another gripping thriller by the author. I particularly like his narrative style of writing.

Next up, Dirty Little Secret, a detective fiction by Jon Stock.

I finished the second (so far last) "Babylon Steel" book, Dangerous Gifts, and wish there was a third book. I truly hope the series hasn't been abandoned or canceled.

I'm rather at loose ends about what I feel like reading next, so I pulled up the "Reading" list on my Aura H2O - all the books that show as having been opened but not completed - for inspiration. (All of those are "opened to first page and not marked unread again, for whatever reason," as opposed to "drifted away mid-story.") The first selection turned out to be a corrupt KEPUB file, so I've made a note to download, fix formatting if needed, and reinstall it. My second choice is another book I sideloaded a while back, before I made a habit of normalizing the formatting before doing so, and... well, it needs work. The table of contents is even out of order! I expect I'll run into a lot of those, but this one's particularly eye-grating.

So, for right now, I'm punting and watching season two of Gotham. Still counts as reading if I turn the subtitles on, right?

Finished "Sheepfarmer's Daughter", by Elizabeth Moon. The first book in the Baen omnibus "The Deed of Paksenarrion", one of my all-time favourite fantasy books. This must be the 4th or 5th time I've read this book, and I love it every time. Superb fantasy. Can't recommend it highly enough.
