firmware inside
when I choose a factory reset in my kobo, the firmware back to a version (I suppose) contained inside the kobo.
Is possible to access to files of the firmware integrated in the device? So for example I can reset with a firmware more recent ![]() |

The factory firmware for KA1 is 3.20.6894, but there was no official release for it.

It can be done, yes - but you should not do it.
The Kobo Aura One has soldered on memory. The recovery partition (unmodified) is your only chance of recovery in case things stop working altogether. If you mess with this partition and goof it up, you have a very nice looking doorstop... If you want to default to a more recent firmware, download that firmware (direct download links you can find in this forum), keep that file around, and then just copy it over USB whenever you had to factory reset. |

I did that with an Kobo Glo which has a removable internal uSD card. With a device that does not have that removable storage, I would not recommend the procedure -- I restored the image of my Glo 3 times before I finally got the factory reset to a newer firmware to work. It didn't make much difference since the first thing I do after a factory reset is to upgrade the firmware but it was well within my definition of fun.

Use telnet/ssh to mount the recovery partition /dev/mmcblk0p2 somewhere; there you will see a upgrade/ folder which contains fs.tgz (instead of KoboRoot.tgz) and subfolders for kernel/uboot images. And you combine those files with your desired firmware upgrade.
On my H2O it looks like this: Code:
upgrade/ upgrade/db.tgz upgrade/fs.tgz upgrade/mx50-ntx upgrade/mx50-ntx/u-boot_lpddr2_512-E606G0-LPDDR2.bin upgrade/mx50-ntx/u-boot_mddr_256-E606F0B-K4X2G323PC.bin upgrade/mx50-ntx/uImage-E606F0B upgrade/mx50-ntx/uImage-E606G0 The db.tgz has the initial database, user manuals and stuff so if you fancy you could even put a backup of your actual database in there. (not enough room for books though) However I'll repeat it, you're more likely to brick your reader by doing so. It's simpler and safer to just do this via USB after the regular firmware reset. You can put up the firmware update you want manually, including backups of your kobo database and books. Last edited by frostschutz; 09-28-2016 at 05:19 AM. |

Confirmed, take a look at this pictures (from an italian blog that review it), specifically to the component called "sandisk".

Basically, it was replacing/modifying files in the restore partition to update the firmware version installed on a factory reset. You need a Kobo with an internal uSD card and then need to open it up to get the uSD card out before starting. I did this on a Glo since it was easy to open up -- dropped it about a metre, it landed on a corner and pretty much popped open. Fun in the wonder if I can do this way but not really useful though with my Aura HD now doing a two step update after a factory reset, it's tempting to revisit the project. OTOH, I'm not enthused about peeling a H2O apart and the Aura One doesn't have the internal uSD card.

On the Glo, I generated an image from the removed uSD card and then mounted the image file. After the modifications, I copied the modified image to a 32GB card for testing so the original uSD card was left unmodified. I did generate two versions that bricked the Glo on a factory reset but the 3rd pass worked. Not very useful but that wasn't on my list of reasons. ![]() Last edited by DNSB; 09-30-2016 at 09:29 PM. |
