Note that in general any iPhone app can be run on iPad. For example, when you open App Store on your iPad, just type "MapleRead" and select "iPhone Only" (upper left corner), you'll see "MapleRead CX". |

While Marvin (both Classic and 3) lacks the page-curl turn animation, the animation called "Reveal" has a similar and more modern effect. Really cool. |

Do you have any requirement to read PDFs? If so, buy the "GoodReader" app. It's the best PDF reader around, to my mind, and is in fact that main thing I use my iPad for (like you I have an Air 2).

Glad you found those to your liking.
I'm at the other end of the scale where "effects" are concerned. They leave me stone cold. Page curling I dont use, and the backgrounds in Mapleread are annoying. I imagine if you pay, you get more choice, but the free version has turned me right off paying for it. That is why I prefer Hyphen over all the others. No muss, no fuss. |

Hyphen is my favorite ereading app, too — and I say this as someone who likes the page-curl animation (which Hyphen has).
I also don't care for fancy backgrounds — just want something plain and light-colored — so Hyphen suits me fine there, too. What I like about MapleRead, though, is it offers a color wheel so you can pick the exact shade of background. However, that feature is not enough to make me leave Hyphen ![]() That said, I think it's really great that there are so many terrific ereading apps to choose from now. Before this summer, reading on my iDevices was an okay experience; now it's truly enjoyable. Last edited by odamizu; 09-23-2016 at 03:11 AM. |

Hyphen (v1.2) offers two types of finger-following page-turn animation effect, namely curl and scroll. These two types match exactly those offered by MapleRead (v1.5.1), namely curl and slide. For those who don't like "curl", you can simply choose "scroll" (Hyphen) or "slide" (MapleRead), as "scroll" and "slide" here are just different labels for the same thing. So I don't really understand why "scroll" is ok, but "slide" leaves you stone cold. ![]() There are two kinds of "backgrounds" in MapleRead. I'm not sure which one was meant. Well, let's talk about both. ![]() For "reading view background", MapleRead offers both pure color background and image background, while Hyphen offers only pure color background. Moreover, MapleRead offers custom background (color or image or hybrid) as part of a custom theme, with a user-friendly color picker (color wheel) and an image picker. (Honestly, I have never seen a better one among all the e-readers I have tried, including iOS apps, Android apps, and other e-ink readers.) So I don't really understand why "the backgrounds in MapleRead are annoying". In general they are of high quality and look very pleasing to me. (I enjoy switching the themes, which include the background, once a while even when reading the same book. Somehow it feels refreshing.) But if you don't like a theme, you are not stuck--you can easily create your own. Specifically, any Hyphen background can be realized in MapleRead, but not vice versa. For "bookshelf view background", MapleRead offers what it calls "Scenes". The built-in ones are very well chosen (see their screenshots). But again, if you don't like them, you can easily create your own scenes with any of your favorite images. Moreover, you can dim the scene lighting gradually and all the way down to total darkness, essentially creating a black background. Alternatively, you can choose Library List View, which gives you pretty much a common iOS table view. (Honestly, I wish iBooks offered this kind of features years ago.) Every MapleRead feature I mentioned above is free. Let's keep the facts straight. No muss, no fuss. ![]() |

Thank you to kyteflyer and odamizu for suggesting Hyphen. With Hyphen, I feel like I can finally stop mourning the demise of Stanza

A new ereader to iPad for epub is Bookari (formerly Mantano). I've used it on Android for several years, and recently switched to an iPad Air 2. It has both free and paid versions, so you can try it out before buying. Its PDF support is very good

App Store shows that Bookari (Mantano Reader) 1.0 was released on Dec 29, 2013. For an iOS app that is almost 3 years old, it doesn't seem to be a new ereader to me. Anyway, that's not the main point. While the Library UI looks pretty nice, the book UI leaves a lot of room for improvement. The EPUB book view has very wide left and right page margins, too wide for my taste. I was a bit surprised that I can't even override basic parameters like line spacing, page margins, font color, background color/image, etc., things that I have taken for granted. Did I miss some setting controls? |
