Sooo... has anyone looked in to LuCouto's miraculous discovery? What was he referring to with the "IMPORTANT UPDATE: I've found it!
So, I've edit the init.py file inside the iOS plugin to add the following line _BCD.add(0x502) # iPad Mini 4 GSM ???" (Post #527) How do I try this?? Where do I go and what do I do, and where do I type this?? |

Unzip the zip file from the first post (that is the plugin) and edit __init__.py file Add that line below line 637. What that does is allow the plugin to recognize an iPad Mini 4. IS your iDevice an iPad Mini 4? Unfortunately, that doesn't actually accomplish anything, because the device is still running iOS 9. The plugin will try to connect to your valid, listed, recognized iDevice, then fail. LuCouto claimed his iPad allowed it anyway... but there does not seem to be a reason and no one else has duplicated it. That is the miraculous discovery -- miraculous because you need to receive a miracle in order for it to work. IF, you are jailbroken, you can use the House Arrest Fix referenced above. |

Issues with Marvin and dropbox
People - many moons ago I purchased and installed Marvin on my ipad to use with Calibre. I was very happy, until it broke after an Apple IOS update.
I recently updated mu ipad to the lastest 9.3.1. (I obviously do not learn FPM), and ibooks does not like it. AHA, I thought, time to switch back to Marvin. But, NO, Marvin is still not working with Apple. I am disappointed, but I was not about to give up. I installed dropbox, made that my 'devise', worked out a new process flow, and I thought I had it licked. But NO, not really. Marvin is now crashing when I try to upload more than 1 book at a time from my drop box account, even with my ipad lashed to my PC. I understand that the manager of this thread is NOT responsible for the development of, or bug fixes for, Marvin. SO I have a few simple questions. 1. Is anyone responsible for Marvin bug fixes? (not redev to overcome Apple upgrade, just the fix for the crash) 2. If not, is Marvin going to be removed from access (I hope not) 3. Is there a better, fully operational, option for reading epub on my iPad I have a lot of books that are in Calibre libraries on my PC. I only have the iPad as a reader, and don't plan to change. DRM is not an issue. Thanks SHIRLEY |

Um, we have a dedicated Marvin subforum -- if you have Marvin questions that have nothing to do with this plugin, you should be asking them there.

Bought Marvin. Installed plugin. iphone 5s all the latest acrss the board.
IOS pops up and configured Marvin. Get this errror: Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 503, in _books File "calibre_plugins.ios_reader_apps.__init__", line 704, in books NotImplementedError Send to device -- main memory. Error duplicated and missing format reported for book which is an epub. Search like crazy here for the error. Found nothing. Probably poor habits on my part. |

I had this question too. I now use Mantano's Bookari as my ePub reader. I load books from Calibre using it's OPDS server. I miss Marvin's integrations a lot

I think I'm very stupid XD
Hi everyone!
I used to use Calibre, Marvin XD, and this plugin to sync my library, until I upgraded my old iPad. I read later all the messages about incompatibility with iOS 8, so I let it rest and forgot all about it. But, a couple days ago, my iPad said I should be using the new Marvin 3 if I was on iOS 9 or later, and I thought: maybe those old problems would be solved now, let's try it again. I'm running Calibre on Ubuntu 16 64bits, and I can't install this plugin from the calibre list. My calibre library is on a usb hard disk, 'cause I format the computer when I upgrade ubuntu. So, new computer, new ipad, calibre library on removable hard disk. I don't know if something's wrong with python or libimobiledevice, or ubuntu 16 is yanking my chain again... Oh, the last sentence says something like: OSError: libimobiledevice.so:can't open the file of the shared object. The file or directory doesn't exist. Sorry, the message is in spanish. Thanks! @miriamele It might be a problem on your side, I just installed the plugin on my XUbuntu 14.04.3, with Calibre 2.58
Though with regard to libimobiledevice, you might have to manually install using apt-get. Because I seem to notice that I have libimobiledevice already installed, and from their website, it seems to be a library for communicating with iOS devices. To install it, use something like: sudo apt-get install libimobiledevice Here's the package info on launchpad: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimobiledevice |

Thank you!! You're a life saver.
Plugin installed, and Marvin 3 on iPad can reach it just fine. Apparently there're a lot of libraries that were installed by default in earlier versions of ubuntu, but are not included in Ubuntu 16 ![]() |

I am very surprised that M3 works with the existing IOSRA and XD plugins; AFAIK M3 has a new interface for external apps to talk to, and we're still waiting for details of that, and for the plugins to be updated. Is there even an option in M3 to open a connection to the plugin?

I posted this over on the Calibre-Devices forum and Kovid suggested posting it here. He also commented: "Although I dont think that plugin is maintained any more."
So is iosRA no longer supported? And does anyone have a thought about the following: Device detected but error communicating So I rarely connect my iPad/iPhone with the lightning cable to my computer to communicate with Calibre, using Dropbox to transfer to Marvin. However, I occasionally connect to transfer a MOBI to Kindle on iPad. Yesterday, I discovered that I can no longer connect properly. I also discovered the same connection difficulty with my wife's iPad and her laptop. Both are using the latest Calibre version. I have gone through Kovid's "Device not detected" protocol, to no avail, so I am posting here. Relevant error messages follow: On connecting the device, Calibre generates the following: calibre, version 2.68.0 ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device Traceback (most recent call last): File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 87, in run File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 503, in _books File "calibre_plugins.ios_reader_apps.__init__", line 704, in books NotImplementedError On Attempting to click debug device detection in Preferences->Miscellaneous, I get: calibre, version 2.68.0 ERROR: Device already detected: A device (iOS reader applications) is already detected by calibre. If you wish to debug the detection of another device, first disconnect this device. Calibre reports the device is connected at the bottom of the main screen. I have removed and reinstalled iosRA. I am not looking to connect via iTunes if at all possible. I'd simply like the usual functionality of being able to connect Calibre to Kindle on the iPad. Thanks for your help. If this is redundant, I apologize, but I was unable to solve the issue by searching the forum. Thanks. Jim N. |

This plugin, as well as Marvin XD, is semi-maintained (by me). Both plugins work on iOS devices with iOS versions older than 8.3 (due to changes Apple implemented in newer versions) and the old Marvin (2, red icon).
To make at least Marvin2 work with newer iOS versions, Marvin's developer would have to change quite a few things - which he won't as he released Marvin 3 some time ago. It wouldn't be hard to make Marvin 3 work nicely with these plugins on iOS newer than 8.3 but, again, the ball is in Kris' field (Marvin's dev) as he would have to make some changes and update a few things - and tell me about it. None of that seems likely to happen any time soon, though. Until then, I can't do anything to improve the situation. Plus: Since buying a Kindle PW3 recently, I'm almost exclusively reading on that so my motivation is not what it once was. Nevertheless, if the situation changes, I'll gladly update the plugins accordingly. |
