Kobo wants me to do an "external factory reset." May try it later and see how it goes. Have to make sure my side loaded books and fonts are ready to reinstall.

Interesting... Can you explain how you would do an "External Factory Reset" as described by Kobo Staff?

IMHO: I don't think it will make a difference. The issue is the software and no amount of reboots or resets is going to make this disappear until they bring in updated Software and they need to do this ASAP

Very little likelihood that's going to help. The problem is that sometimes it's not picking up the fact that WIFI is turned off so it thinks it can sync and gets caught in a loop that uses battery. If wifi is on it should automatically sync your position if you close a book or go to the homescreen IIRC, but it shouldn't launch that if wifi is off. I think under some as yet undetermined circumstances it is trying to do this sync when shouldn't/can't and gets stuck in a loop and burns battery power (even with wifi turned off). I don't think it's even trying to search for an available wifi network or turn wifi on in these cases.

In that case, couldn't it be solved by simply logging off on the device? If there's no account registered, what is there to sync? Just a thought.

Logging off your device will delete your data base and it will be like day one. The books would still be there but you would have to rebuild all. The easiest way to avoid all this is to not enable wifi and use the desktop app to setup and sync your reader.

Ok. Supposing I reset the device, set it up through the desktop app without ever turning on wifi etc, but having previously backed up the database, and restoring it after the reset, would that keep my collections, progress, etc, intact? And wouldn't reintroduce the bug, as well?

Three days I go I found it syncing and could not get it to stop without a reboot despite the fact that the autosync box was still unchecked. Sat and Sun battery was full despite using the reader and this morning it was down to 60%. Read on the train this morning and battery is down to 25% just now although sync is still off.
Read my post a couple up. It is probably not trying to do a full sync, unless you tapped the sync button. The autosync option has nothing to do with this. And the only workaround for this is to reboot.

Long term, it is very unlikely that this would help. It is possible that letting the desktop application do the setup and downloading any purchased books would delay the first time the sync failed as described.

For the restore and backup, it depends on whether you are sideloading or buying from Kobo. If you do no sideloading, just let the device sync. This will include the books and their status, collections and annotations

If you sideload only, it might work. The issue will be the mismatch between the books from Kobo (including recommendations) and what is on the drive. The device sorting this out might trigger exactly the problem you are trying to avoid.

If you have a mix of purchased and sideloaded, then I wouldn't advise the restore. Let the device handle the purchased books, and use Calibre plus my Kobo Utilities plugin to sort out the collections and reading status.

I still don't have the draining issue, with wifi off and no other tweaks. The only thing I did with the device was add an extra font...

I'm looking forward to getting a USB-C equipped Kobo Aura One 2.
I know, but I'd still have loved one. I wouldn't have needed a converter then to connect the reader to my phone (as I do have a USB-C/USB-C kable, but not a USB-C/USB-Micro cable)

PeriodicAutoSync=false not used on either. I have no sideloaded books.
This means it isn't a software problem alone. Thank you for letting me know! I'll contact the vendor and see if I can get mine exchanged or returned for good until this has been sorted out.

Actually David, I have not had the sync bug since doing this. It seems to me to be entirely related to the wifi handling of things.
Therefor it would appear to be a best case solution to solving battery drain until the new firmware is released. I have had no issues since I have done this.

Maybe it's of some use to know:

I do have some books bought in the Kobo account to which the device is connected. I did the following, when I got it.

- Switched off Wifi, never turned it on either.
- Set up and synced the device using the desktop app.
- Then I removed all books from the device, using the device's menu.
- Sideloaded the books I wanted on it, using Calibre.

(Basically, the same way as I've been using my Kindle.)

Battery life is very good; it drops less than 1% during the night.

I received my KA1 last week. Before charging the ereader the second time I turned off sync in the config file and turned off Wifi. I was able to read for about 18 to 20 hours before I had to charge it again.
At night I lose less than 1%.

What did surprise me was that when the battery was at 7% I was still able to read for several hours. Those last percentages decreased only very slowly.
