The app binaries are not deleted, just hidden. They remain part of the iOS system itself. Probably the app data is deleted, but that is the only space you'll save. To restore you 'install' them using App Store. I think I'll be keeping my 'Apple apps I don't use' folder, I don't see much point in just hiding them, and forgetting they are even available should I find a reason to use them in the future.

The thing I'm most interested in is ability of 3rd party apps to integrate with Siri, and maybe improvements to QuickType keyboard. I don't use Messages, Maps, Photos, Home, Apple Music, or Notes. I use Apple News sometimes, but cannot say I have really liked it. Will see if the improvements are enough for me to use it more.

So this seems like a very minor and inconsequential release to me. I'm still waiting for third party apps (like Kindle) to support split screen and add keyboard navigation hotkeys.

js, if your iDevice does not have enough memory to perform an over-the-air update you can attach it to a PC and use iTunes to avoid the issue of needing to delete anything to get the update. Or at least so I have read.

Yes I know. But it is old and it works well with 9.x.x on it for what I use it for, so I really don't see the need to update to what is likely a slower running iOS 10, and likely a larger footprint in memory as well. I mostly use it for reading Kindle eBooks and tracking weather conditions. No heavy lifting is done with the older iPad Mini 2. I also have no plans to update my older iPhone 5 because it rarely gets used and is kept around for a backup just in case the iPhone 6 Plus takes a nose dive. My iPhone 6 Plus will likely get updated though.

T-Mobile warning iPhone 6, 6+, and SE users to not install iOS 10

According to MacRumors:

Quote:
T-Mobile CEO John Legere says T-Mobile customers who own an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or iPhone SE should not install Apple's iOS 10 update, released on Tuesday. According to Legere, iOS 10 is causing those three iPhone models to lose connection to the T-Mobile network.
Glad I waited since I have T-Mobile as my carrier.

ETA: T-Mobile finally sent me a text message tonight asking me to hold off on installing iOS 10.

First impressions.
- Touch ID requires physically pushing the Home button now. Before, you just had to place finger on the button. Maybe there is some good reason for this, but I don't particularly like this. I often have my iPad in a stand with keyboard paired, and I'll have to counteract the force of pushing the button somehow to avoid destabilizing it. Or type my passcode in with keyboard.
- Quick Settings (swipe up from bottom) is split into two panels now. If you were trying to find the playback controls, you have to swipe over to that panel. Again I don't particularly like this but perhaps understanding will arrive that it is better somehow. Please don't tell me app developers can now add new widgets and panels that you have to swipe even more to get to 'quickly'.
- I've had it complain a couple of times about an 'incompatible accessory', and while it fails to specify any details, I assume it is my third-party USB cable (the Official Apple one is too short and flimsy), which right now is plugged into the pass-through Lightening port on a USB adapter (Apple's if the packaging was to be believed). It stopped charging, and only resumed after I unplugged the adapter from iPad and plugged it back in (there's nothing plugged into the adapter USB port at the moment). This never happened with iOS 9. Maybe it won't happen any more but if it does it is going to be very annoying.

Apparently our iPad 3 is not going to get this update. It's not clear why that is the case, but apart from potential for apps dropping support for iOS 9 that is perhaps not a bad thing.

I guess I need to go over the 'what's new' list again, maybe even review developer facing features to know what I'm missing. As it is, I'm not seeing any compelling reason to update.

Thanks, I looked for a way to disable the new behavior but did not think to check under Accessibility. And why would I? But at least it is somewhere...

This tip from the article is especially useful:

Quote:
From your TouchID-enabled iPhone or iPad, head to Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button. There, find the option labeled Rest Finger to Open.

With Rest Finger to Open disabled (the default configuration in iOS 10), touching the home button with your finger will unlock your device but leave you at your lock screen. Enabling the option will automatically unlock and open the device when your finger touches the home button, taking you to the home screen or your last open app and effectively reverting the way that TouchID functions to pre-iOS 10.

Yeah, but now we've got the fix actually detailed HERE, on MR, rather than relying on that link continuing to work in the future.

I've always had to push the Home button to work the touch ID feature on my iPhone 6 Plus. It never worked by just putting my thumb over it and touching it.

I just got a text message from T-Mobile saying the issue with intermittent reception has been resolved and it is okay to now install iOS 10. I'm still going to wait though.

In iOS 9 I found it depends. If the screen is dark (off) then I have to push the button and then I could put my thumb on it. However, if it was already lit, showing the notification screen, then I could just touch it. I also found that it would insist on my entering my passcode from time to time as well and not accept my fingerprint at all. This was on my iPad Air2 with a magnetic cover. In iOS 10 I am still figuring out all the nuances.

I get asked to enter my passcode a lot too. I tried again tonight to get it to accept just a touch rather than a push of the button, but even without any case on it won't do it. I searched for an obscure setting like the one in iOS 10 but cannot find one. Kind of odd. I've had a lot of trouble getting the Touch ID to work with apps because it requires a push on the button and that in turn closes the app.

So it looks like iOS 10 has changed the charging thresholds and I cannot charge from ports that used to work previously, at least with my 3rd party cables. These still work if plugged into Apple AC adapter. A pain, because while said USB ports don't charge as quickly, they are more readily available than an AC plug, and one of them is to let me tether to my Kangaroo PC so I can use my iPad as its touchscreen. Official Apple cable makes no difference, it just seems to need more amps now. Sheesh. Hope there will be a tweak forthcoming.
