As for exporting, Kindle saves all your highlights and notes into a text file. It just can't be simpler than that.
I'm talking about the Kindle vs Kobo in terms of software - I have a H2O and managed what you're attempting on the first try, I'm not sure why it should be different on the Aura unless the new update modified (broke) something in the software (wouldn't be the first time this happens). Or unless it has manufacturing faults.

I also did say it was "in my experience" - wasn't trying to make an absolute statement. As I wrote in a post a few pages back on this thread I also bought a Kindle Paperwhite 3 after years of exclusive Kobo use and for the first few weeks couldn't manage highlighting, which if we take Mobileread as the sum of all e-reader users would put me in the extreme minority. Make of that what you will.

Thanks for the tip! You can add a line to the Kobo's .config file to enable a 'Export highlights' option in your book. They should then appear as a .txt file in the root of your device, IIRC.

One big difference between the One is capacitive versus IR, which means less precise for me. Of course the Kobo softwares for the One might not help.

I have no problem calling notes on the H2O nor on the Glo HD, major problems on the One for instance. I've had problems using the keyboard initially, now I manage with the pulpiest part of the ring or little fingers, which is not the intuitive way... and I haven't ever had to do it with my capacitive phones.

So, KA1 owners how good is the 1 truly?

Seems like there's been a lot of mixed review regarding screen/lightning quality, the firmware and issues with the battery life. Are these dealbreakers or perhaps just early manufacturing issues?

So is this Font-Freedom patch or a plugin necessary to use these additional fonts you are talking about? I thought the Kobo supported user-added fonts by default? Is that not right?

You can add whichever fonts you like adding them in a fonts file at the root of the kobo, but you need the font-freedom patch to be able to adjust the weight of the non-native fonts.

After adding the Font Freedom patch (I've just re-installed it) and fixing the full screen rendering issues by injecting some CSS when books get sent to the reader, this device has become exactly what I ever wanted in an e-reader.

I only care about the hardware, and features directly relating to reading books, such as fonts and layout. Peripheral features such as Facebook or other social networks, PDF-support, comic support, Pocket, highlighting, annotating.... even the on-reader store are of no importance to me. I skip those in the reviews, and disable all of them as soon as I get a new device.

Can anyone state the size of their total memory on the KA1? From windows or mac or Linux? I'm curios to see what will be the results.. I'm not sure the total memory is being correctly reported for my device.

The reader has 8GB of storage. Assuming that Kobo is not lying, the total memory before formatting is undoubtedly either 8000 or 8192 MB (depending if they count a gigabyte at 1000 or 1024 MB).

After formatting and the part taken up by the operating system and the software, the total storage space available for user content is 6.72 GB.

edit: the reader itself reports 6890 MB of user memory, which is 6.728 GB.

AFAICS, everything's good here.

I don't know if it has been in this thread where it has been asked which is the origin of Kobo decision for showing Overdrive option (stupid as I have library cards being Spanish) and the answer is: account settings, not IP (tested).

t, as a reminder, it is usually the small minority of people who encounter a problem or bug who are critical...whereas the vast majority of happy people tend to stay more behind the scenes.

As a longtime user of Sony ereaders (which have a stellar build quality), my experience with the KA1 has been favorable...once the initial startup difficulties were hurdled.

All I ever do is read books (epub/mobi). I don't highlight, don't care about time to read or any other features (browser on an ereader, seriously?!). I use one font, mostly one size for everything. I use page forward and back and sometimes dictionary. Any other features are (mostly) useless, possibly buggy, and therefore dead weight in my book (pun intended). Any ereader which can supply the simple functionality I outlined, reliably, is good.

So from the above perspective, the KA1 is just about perfect for me. The hardware is superb (so far ). I switched from Kindle PW2 because of the larger screen on the KA1. The software is less stable/polished than the Kindle one but you can tweak and patch a ton of things on the Kobo. Thanks to this forum, I learned how to do it and now I've got my KA1 set up juuuust right.

I read a lot of non-fiction material and often highlight text that I need to save for notes. Unfortunately, highlighting on Kobo is frustrating. I never had these problems on any of my Kindle devices before. With Kobo, it is a trial and error every time and there is no easy way to highlight text to next page.

Taking notes out from Kobo is also not as easy as it is from a Kindle device.

I'll look into Kobo again in the future if they will ever improve their software/hardware for better annotations.
I would only use a stylus enabled device for good annotation, such as Surface3 which I use almost everyday. I found it frustrating to highlight texts on my H2O. I also tried koreader but it tended to crush on my device. It seems Aura One is not any better in this respect.

Apparently there's a shortage of KA1's. Must be a pretty dam fine ereader (certainly looks it).
