I think it depends what you're used to. I find page speed in standard epubs to be perfectly fast enough for any practical purpose, (e.g. read page - turn page - repeat to end of book). However for anyone coming from Kindle or Android device to Kobo I think it just feels slow in comparison. There is no doubt that page turning is much faster in kepubs if that's important to someone. It's most noticable if you keep tapping to skip through pages. In standard epub it soon can't keep up with the repeat tapping whereas in kepubs it's fine.

Only kepubs have the permanent top margin containing book title. Standard epubs have nothing at all. In fact, personally, I need to force-inject a bit of top margin so the text isn't too close to the top bezel.

Indeed, the wasted space of kepubs sucked which is why I use the full screen fix and the kepub full screen bug patch. Both work beautifully. The only advantage I get out of kepubs is the (noticeably) faster page turning speed. It's similar to what I'm used to with the KPW2. With epub it was much slower.

I normally use ePubs and haven't updated my (H2O) software for some time, please can somebody tell me if it is possible to use Calibre created kepubs with a patch to eliminate the top (title) header completely while leaving a (smaller) footer with all info.

No - to the elimination of top (title) header.
Yes - to the smaller footer if you use a patch.

Using the unofficial 'fullscreen mode' removes both top and bottom.

•Page numbers show the number of page turns remaining in the current chapter instead of the estimated number of pages for the entire book.◦If you don't want this, there is an option in the driver settings to force full-book page numbers.
•Reading statistics (time left in this chapter, time for the next chapter, time to complete the book)
•The book title is shown at the top of each page.
•The chapter title, if any, is shown at the bottom of each page with the page numbers.
Footmote selection is also much easier in kepubs. And don't kepubs have popup windows for footnotes?

I've read that numerous times, but in the book I'm currently reading, clicking a footnote link just moves to a page at the end of the book where the footnote is, and if you click the footnote number again, it moves back to the text.

This book is originally an EPUB bought from Kobo. On the KPW1, that same book (as an AZW3), has popups. The KA1 is using a KEPUB converted by the Kobo Touch Extended driver.

It depends on exactly how the link is done. Some will be seen as a link elsewhere, some get seen as a footnote link. I don't know what the rules are. But, if the book is an epub 3, there can be code specifically for footnote links.

It depends on the book and the note, and I never understood why some popped up and some went directly to the notes file - it doesn't depend on size for one. The notes were one of the reasons I chose kepubs when I moved to Kobos (from Sony). I had great difficulties calling notes from epubs, which were solved with kepubs in my former Kobos, but it is more difficult for me on the One (I have more difficulties choosing anything in the One). I think my arthritic fingers have difficulties interacting with the capacitive layer: when I try calling from the bottom line I often get the next right icon, when I try to type, I must use the pulpiest part of my fingers - usually the ring or little finger of either hand are best.

FYI I have only kepubs and PDFs on my Kobos, and all but two of the kepubs are converted by Calibre when tranferred to the devices. The two were problem books which I had to convert in Calibre before sending for them to work.

The main reason I would choose kepubs in any case is the look of them : I don't like the rendering of epubs in Kobos, and I am one of those (a minority???) who prefer header, footer, and some margin on the sides. I think any book, and more particularly poetry, looks better this way. I like that the increased real estate allows bigger margins - and longer lines.

I like the reading stats at the bottom too: so comfortable for deciding when to interrupt (before sleeping or whatever).

My replacement is on the way from Hong Kong. Customer Support hasn't responded with notification of shipment. Looked at FedEx Delivery Manager for the status of something I shipped yesterday, and saw it.

If you believe your Aura ONE has a defect, let customer service know upon receipt. Don't wait days/weeks later when they may be more inclined to not acknowledge it as such.

Did you have to send back the original first? Or do they send you something to ship it back in once you get your new one?

I still have the original one. Haven't received any instructions on what to do. They will probably get around to responding to my last inquiry (status of replacement) and provide that information.

I started the process of exchanging mine last Friday -- don't send an email because it gets ignored. After I did the chat on Monday and sent pictures, I finally received the email to send mine back with shipping instructions this morning. They didn't mention when my replacement would be shipped, but I assume it won't be until they get this one back.

Hhmmmm, wonder why that wasn't the case for me. I was asked to provide pictures (front, back, receipt), then another request for shipment address. When I opened a ticket, I did attach pictures of the bright spot, and the representative on the phone confirmed he was looking at it.

Thanks jackie_w, that's what I suspected. As I hate the top wasted space but still want the footer info, I guess I'll be sticking with ePubs then.

I didn't have to provide pics of the back or a copy of the receipt. They did ask about the shipment address and told me they would escalate to the replacement team. They emailed me a transcript of the chat. Last night I receive an email that said it had been sent to the Supply Chain team. This morning I received the email with the instructions on returning the device and the shipping labels. I guess there is a possibility that the new one could be on the way. I have never received a shipping confirmation for the one I am sending back. I can't use the FedEx delivery manager because this is coming to my office.

I really appreciate Amazon's customer service after dealing with Kobo. It's a very slow process.
