Help with "kindleunpack"
Hi everyone, i'm new to this forum so forgive me if I get anything wrong in my post. So here's my problem, I remove DRM off of my book with calibre method and use the "kindleunpack" plugin to get the "epub". The epub works fine with my calibre and android readers, but it has problem opening on ibooks and adobe digital editions. By that I mean they get stck on page "2".
So to check what the problem was, I unpacked the AZW3 file with the "kindleunpack" plugin and opened opened the "epub" present in the unpacked folder with ADE, still the same problem. But when I convert the AZW3 to epub, the file works just fine with ibooks and ADE, anyone faced this problem. I'm not the only one though, one of my friend faced the same situation. Calibre version: 2.67 kindleunpack version: 0.81.2 DeDRM version: 6.5.1 |

For future reference, a post like this would probably do better in the EPUB format subforum. I have reported your post so a moderator can move it -- no need to do anything youself.
![]() Also, this isn't about KindleUnpack so much as it is about the resulting EPUB. ... I am not sure what could cause an EPUB to act like that (it rings a bell, but I simply cannot recall the details), however, a calibre conversion will generally fix such issues. KindleUnpack extracts an EPUB based directly on the MOBI/AZW3 contents, whereas calibre conversions will perform a number of transformations to normalize the markup of the ebook. |

I have seen this type of error in different circumstances where there is a problem with the TOC (Table of Contents) in the EPUB. Do all of the TOC links in the affected EPUB point to Page 2? Does this affect only the one extracted epub, or all of them? How many different azw3 files have you extracted ebooks from?

Moved to the epub forum for now. May move to the Kindleunpack thread if it proves to be an issue with KindleUnpack.
KU does it's best to create a valid epub from a kindlebook, but that's not always possible. Especially if the kindlebook wasn't created from an epub in the first place. Try validating the resulting epub with an external validator of some kind (EpubCheck or Sigil's Flightcrew plugin) and see what kind of complaints might get generated. That may narrow down where to look. |

Each one of those epubs with this problem sho different errors when I checked them on idpf validator. I really can't figure out the problem, if it was just me I would've thought it has something to do with my software or plugins, but as I said my friend is facing the same situation. Something to consider is that the original could have been created from an EPUB3. Trying to force it into an EPUB2 box may be the reason it doesn't function properly. Also, some Kindlebooks are, quite frankly, a complete disaster under the hood. You might be better off converting the azw3 in a case like that instead of trying to unpack into an epub.

@steve-kon. Are you able to check whether all of the TOC entries point to Page 2 in the affected epub? Also, you can post the details of the books affected, just not the books themselves.

To emphasize what DiapDealer said ...
KindleUnpack will "unpack" an azw3 to an "epub-like" structure, but is is not a real converter in and of itself. If the azw3 was created by passing in a valid epub3 or epub2, Kindleunpack it unpack it to a valid epub3 (or epub2) or something very very close to valid. If however someone passed in an old mobi or some other format (such as a non-valid epub) into kindlegen to create the azw3, then KindleUnpack will not produce a valid epub. That said ... KindleUnpack will produce something that should be importable into Sigil (or Calibre) as an epub so that it can be validated and any problems fixed. So you may have run into one of those azw3 that were not generated with a valid epub and therefore the output of KindleUnpack will need to be validated and fixed in Sigil or Calibre or by hand, to get a proper valid epub. @steve-kon. Are you able to inspect the Table of Contents and tell us whether the links point to page 2. This was the problem the last time this sort of question arose. The EPub would work well in some readers but not others where it would not go past a certain page.

There's a calibre plugin called ScrambleEbook that can be used to get help with copyrighted books. It garbles the text but leaves all formatting in place, so no copyright is being violated. It's been approved by the MobileRead Editors/Moderators for exactly this type of use.
If you could share the scrambled epub, that may help someone diagnose the issue. The ScrambleEbook plugin can be found here. |

Somehow that doesn't surprise me. As the plugin changes the ePUB, this could result in fixing the (structural) error. How about using the online ePUB validator and upload the ePUB from the unpack into that. The resulting report should help you into finding the possible error. You could post the report here. If it is long, you can put it in spoiler tags to keep it small.

The ScrambleEpub plugin is designed to introduce the least amount of structural change as possible. Still, it's not unprececented that a problem goes away post-scramble. My first suspicion would an image-related issue (since the scrambler replaces images with dummy ones).
EDIT: After glancing at the html, I have very little doubt that the source for this particular kindlebook was not an epub. That's probably a big part of the problem right there. Last edited by DiapDealer; 09-15-2016 at 11:10 AM. |
