Has anyone downloaded an epub 3 from Kobo through ADE yet? Those used to require the desktop app, but are supposed to work through ADE now according to the Kobo website; I just haven't had occasion to try it yet.

You'll probably need ADE 3 or 4 for that? Then don't you get the new DRM as well, if you're unlucky? Are there actually any devices, besides tablets, that can handle EPUB3?

That's why I was asking if anyone has tried it.

I don't think epub3 per se is a problem, but Kobo used to force a download as kepub through the desktop app. Hence the need for the obok plugin. It would be nice if I didn't have to bother with that dreadful desktop app anymore.

I've downloaded an epub3 from Kobo using ADE 2.01 about a week ago. Had no problems.

I thought I had, but epub 3 books I can find are DRM free. It might be that a few of the kepubs were epub 3, but the epub versions were epub 2.

Okay, I went ahead and tried it myself. I just downloaded an epub3 through ADE 1.7 and successfully deDRMed it through calibre. And I've had a look at the content.opf file to confirm that it really is epub3. Yay! Bye bye Kobo Desktop, and good riddance!

Can someone confirm that Kobo Desktop has changed the key again? I haven't purchased anything for a while now, but was just thinking about picking up some Ilium books.

The latest (4.0) Kobo Desktop has changed the way the encryption is done. Perhaps just the key, perhaps more. It may be some time before obok works again.

But the ADE route still works.

Just to be clear about the Kobo desktop, there are two changes.

Firstly, there is a change to an option used in the database. On Windows, the Python SQLite library used by the Obok plugin is not compatible with this change. The error displayed when using Obok will be something about an encrypted database. The change to fix this is to use apsw instead of sqlite3. Kobo also made the change to the database on the device. I have already made changes to the all the calibre plugins under my control to fix this.

Then, the encryption for the books appears to have changed.

A comment over at Alf's mentions that it may be a bit longer than usual getting Obok running again because Kobo has made a more substantial change this time.

As long as we can still download ePub from Kobo, then we can wait for an updated Obok.

I can confirm that Kobo Desktop 4.0.5579 did not change the content encryption scheme.

The problem most probably is in Obok itself, because my own tool works just fine.

PS: on the side note, there's now a new Books.sqlite database in program data folder, which is encrypted. No idea what it's for.

As long as Kobo supports the use of ADE 1.7 and 2.01 (which would need to be for a very long time to come, because many current readers don't support the newer DRM schemes), Alf's tools should never break, as ADE 1.7 and 2.01 won't ever change again.
