I'm willing for authors to make some adjustments to events to allow for their characters to be present. Anachronisms are painful if I notice them.

Short of me learning to read French, having the dialogue in English is just a necessary condition for me to be able to read it. I assume that the characters are actually speaking French, and the author is merely rendering their words in a way I am capable of reading.

But of course modern fiction is all perfectly accurate - we can learn exactly what being an attorney, policeman, doctor, etc. is like from watching TV shows about them

To add a little stern recordkeeping to a thread that has already had some wild swings of mood, here is some historical fiction that would have to be thrown out with the bathwater, if we were to abandon the game altogether. I have limited myself to books and serials that were written by authors who were not alive during the time concerned, even as an infant:
1. War and Peace by Tolstoy —Actually, I'll stop at one. I had Dumas, Dickens, Hugo, Faulkner, Stevenson, George Eliot, Hawthorne, and Charlotte Brontë lined up on the top of my head, but any rule that excludes War and Peace is a rule to toss. You may as well say the whole game of fiction should be abandoned. Last edited by molloee; 09-13-2016 at 12:07 PM. |

Sorry if this was taboo! I tried to nick it immediately. For those who don't have mod privileges—I am guessing that is why you're green—I had a little section agreeing with 4691mls that all fiction is laced with inaccuracies anyway, and if you avoid historical fiction to free yourself from writers' base speculation about what life looks like on the surface, you may as well avoid the whole lot. But I thought I was being wordy and too loose, so I went back down to just Tolstoy.
My edited post was not an accurate reflection of life as it had occurred three minutes prior. Unfortunately, DiapDealer has a sharp eye for anachronisms. ![]() |

I'm happy to read long posts as long as they are broken into paragraphs.
Just don't post huge photos, or links to pirated books, and you should be fine! |

I just saw this quote: "Fiction reveals truth that reality obscures."--Ralph Waldo Emerson
I would like to find the source (in Emerson's writings or orations) of that quote and see if he expands upon that thought. I might gain a better appreciation of the genre of fiction, including historical fiction. But I never have thought much of Emerson or his buddy Thoreau. I should say, of their transcendentalism, not them personally. |
