Lord, Walter: The Good Years.v1, 26 Jan 2009
The Good Years, 1900-1914 by Walter Lord is a survey of American Life in the early years of the 20th century. It covers the Wright brothers, the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, child labor, and the Panic of 1907 and more.
I found the section on the Panic of 1907 particularly interesting and resonant in these days of economic difficulty and perhaps instructive as to the course of government response. In those days, there was no government response...that was to wait for 1932. But the role of J. Pierpont Morgan was pivotal. I can not trace the dates of this prolific author and most of his works are in copyright and probably all are outside the US. But the copyright on this work was not renewed, so US residents...enjoy. |

In the U.S. copyright for works published in 1962 never had to be renewed -- the 1978 rewrite of the copyright law extended copyright terms for all works which were then in copyright and removed the necessity of renewing the copyright. The existing copyrights were all extended to a total of 75 years and then extended by the Sony Bono Law (nicknamed the Mickey Mouse Law) which extended existing copyrights to 95 years total.

Copyrights
This (from wikipedia) is what I have been going on. I will be the first to admit this area of law is murky at best.
All copyrightable works published in the United States before 1923 are in the public domain[13]; works created before 1978 but not published until recently may be protected until 2047. [14] For works that received their copyright before 1978, a renewal had to be filed in the work's 28th year with the Library of Congress Copyright Office for its term of protection to be extended. The need for renewal was eliminated in 1992, but works that had already entered the public domain by non-renewal did not regain copyright protection. Therefore, works published before 1964 that were not renewed are in the public domain. No additional copyrights will expire (thus entering the public domain) until at least 2019 due to changes in the applicable laws. |
