Where are you looking for it on your computer? Is Calibre detecting it? Disk Utility?

Also, check
Finder > Preferences > General > External Disks
and
Finder > Preferences > Sidebar > Devices.

@meera I got that working, thanks. There was something weird going on with my computer -- no external drives were showing up.

But now that I have it connected, I started Calibre and it recognized the device. So I sent some books to the Kobo. And I see them when I look in the Finder at the Kobo drive.

But they don't show up when I try to see them on the Kobo itself? The only book it shows is a Preview I downloaded from the Kobo Store last night. How do you access books you loaded from Calibre? Did Calibre convert them to the wrong format? I think it converted them to EPUB.

Thanks!

This happens to me ALL the time. So annoying. Not sure what it is that triggers USB devices to stop showing up in the finder (seems random) but a reboot always seems to work.

Hello Everyone,

I've noticed that the page refresh (when moving to the next page) for EPUBs is noticeably slower than for KEPUBs. KEPUBs have a very responsive page transition, while EPUBs have a annoying delay.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I was also wondering if there were some specific settings I could use in Calibre when converting to EPUBs and side-loading to make page turns faster?

Thanks!

If there is one thing about the KA1 that could be better (besides the difficult initialization/sync process), it is the page turn speed (which is considerably slower than my Sony ereaders).

There is a configuration file, which you can find on the device, in the folder ".kobo\Kobo\Kobo eReader.conf" (on the top of my head).

If you put this in there (add the [FeatureSettings] category if you don't already have it):

Code:
[FeatureSettings]
FullScreenReading=true
then an extra, undocumented, and experimental (and buggy) option appears in the menu, to remove the header and footer so you can read full screen.

It works quite well with EPUB files, but sometimes, you get a large white space on the bottom of the screen. This can possibly be fixed with some CSS settings. Also, things like reading progress, chapter length preview and time to read don't work with EPUBs (they also don't work if you don't use this full screen mode). The full screen mode works with KEPUB as well, but it has some rendering problems, which I'm trying to fix in this thread, but it's not going too well because I'm not yet very experienced with Kobo readers and their KEPUB weirdness.

I'll try again tonight. If I can get the rendering fixed with the KEPUB files (which I'd prefer, so reading progress, chapter length preview and time to read work) or EPUB (I probably prefer the larger screen estate than the reading progress options), then I'll post a 'definitive post' with a summary of how to get one or the other fixed.

I've never found it slow, but like the comment above you says, that may well be a epub vs. kepub issue. I let the Extended Driver do an on-the-fly conversion, and I've heard before that the the kepub reader is faster than the epub reader.

As far as I can see, the kepub reader page turning speed is limited by the speed of the display itself (which is on the order of 250 ms or so).

Unfortunately there is no magic setting to achieve kepub page-turning-speed ( in fact screen responsiveness in general) in standard epubs.

Kepub and epub each have their pros and cons. This is one of the kepub pros.

Please be mindful of posting misleading information.

1) Full screen mode is a little buggy, unless you patch your Kobo, which is a fairly easy and painless thing to do. This has been mentioned to you several times now by me. I know you continue to have issues, but as you've got discussions going in several threads I've stopped trying to keep pace. I have full screen enabled and have zero issues with kepubs.

2) Chapter progess, reading time, etc. all work fine. You just don't have them at the bottom of the screen. A simple tap to bring up the controls, and another on the appropriate option will display all of this information.

I also have a bright spot closer to the upper left part of the screen. Additionally the color hue is perfect at the top of the screen and inconsistent at the bottom. So I believe it's a defective device. Hopefully I can get it replaced. Were you able to get a replacement?

Someone else indicated they also have a bright spot above center on the screen. I encourage folks to reach out to Kobo soon after receipt.

Thanks for the replies!

Any downsides to converting my library to KEPUBs so that the page turns are faster? I've done some research and this requires a Calibre Plugin to accomplish, correct?

As a former Kindle user my entire library was in AZW3, and I recently converted them all to EPUB. With the new plugin would I convert to KEPUB via Calibre? To complicate things I noticed several different plugins - an "extended driver" plugin as well as an input / output conversion plugin for KEPUB.

Any advice on how to proceed or should I just stick with EPUBs for now?

Thanks!

One of my posts from a different Aura One thread may shed some light

I see this too. I actually feel like I'm seeing a rainbow (although subtle) when I'm reading with the natural light on about 50% or more. My base light also seems to have a bit of a greenish tinge to it near the bottom and a greenish glow near the top (when the natural light is off). Not sure if this is normal or not. I'm not hugely bothered by it (I'm not as picky as most) but maybe it's not normal?

I don't think I will ever read again without at least some of the natural setting turned up anyway. Now that I see what it's like, the base color is horrible (so blue)!

I just requested a status update on the replacement. Yesterday they acknowledged receipt of my information.

Well, I'll just wait for the corrected firmware then. I'll guess it is in their own best interest to fix this one or people will flock in to give their devices back.
