I just caught you! You say it is dangerous, but you would have to have seen an episode or two to know about the periscope and coffee pot listening device . . . .

Actually, I don't worry about comedy so much as I do about drama. Drama can look like reenactments, where comedy is usually so outlandish (the Hogan's Heroes things that you mentioned are examples) that people know not to believe that it is real and they will take everything that they see with a grain of salt.

My previous "Papa Bear calling Goldilocks" bit didn't give that away?

I don't really worry about any of it, to tell the truth. I give readers a bit more credit when it comes "believing everything they read." I'm no rocket scientist and I know better than to take anything mentioned in historical fiction as a sight-unseen fact. I suspect most other readers do too. And for those who don't (know better) ... I don't suspect a dearth of historical fiction in their formative years would have made them turn out any less gullible and/or dumb.

That and the fact that I don't really worry about trying to save others from their own stupidity. Especially not by eliminating plausible sounding fiction that might "trick" those poor unsuspecting brain-dead readers of books.

Maybe not in the spirit of the OP, but I will recommend this site where you can find historical fiction organised by time and place.

Cool. I'll have to check that out.

edit: Lian Hearn's books is actually listed as 'Historical Fantasy' on that site. If you like historical novels and fantasy, you should check those out, but they (the Otori books) are written for children around 14-16 year old. They offer some quick and light reading though, and they're entertaining if you like this sort of thing.

I do like my historical fiction, if it includes significant real events, to have a postscript that describes where the fiction deviates from accepted history. (The Sharpe novels seem to be good at this.)

Yes, I agree. All the naval actions in Forester's "Hornblower" series are also based on real events and he too describes what the events that the book was based on were.

Certainly it's a book series. Probably the definitive series of historic naval fiction. Forester was meticulous in his research and an expert in the field of the late 18th/early 19th century Royal Navy.

If the history isn't accurate, I'm not likely to read a work of historical fiction. Anachronism and whitewashing pulls me out of the story.

How far do you take it, though? Would you refuse to read a book set in medieval France unless all the dialogue were in medieval French, or would you accept the anachronism of modern English dialogue?
