Good grief, the amount of text on the KA1 as opposed to the Paperwhite is astonishing.

For me the biggest issues are sharpness and contrast.
My Kindle voyage is so much better in these areas

Too bad since I find the screen size absolutely perfect, and really appreciate how much you can customize fonts and margins.

Impossible, unless there is something wrong with your screen. They both have the same 300ppi, so they should be equally sharp, and on the KA1, you can actually set the text thickness to increase contrast if you want.

I know... if you can find a book that works with the full screen option, or you'll lose about 1,5cm of screen real estate at both the top and bottom. I'm trying to find a way to permanently fix the problem... but it's harder than first imagined. The old css don't work reliably.

Unfortunately, it's not that simple
The extra Glass on the Auta One is not a good thing for sharpness.

increasing the thickness will not make the text blacker and the background whiter. And the difference between this two things is what contrast is.

It will not make the background whiter indeed (but you can do that with the front-light), but it will make the text definitely blacker once you cross a certain threshold of thickness. I don't have grey text on the Aura ONE, at least, assuming the book is as it should be.

When you use the backlight, text looks more grey to me.

Of course I didn't say it's bad.
Just not as good as the Kindle Voyage.

I have to agree. Definitely not complaining though, with the significantly larger screen.

Would be nice if Amazon offered something similar for what the Oasis costs. Even more disconcerting (at that price) that they got rid of the auto brightness on that model. I justified my purchase, given what was available in the market at that time. I can't continue to do so.

Well, I'm giving up trying to get the full screen view with KEPUBs fixed. However, when using EPUBs, that do work with the full screen view, features such as Time To Read, and chapter length previews and such stop working. There is no way to see where you are in the book, except when calling up the menu and then looking at the table of contents tab.

Normal EPUB view is not an option: it wastes 2cm of space on the bottom of the screen to show you the page number and the page looks highly unbalanced.

edit... what the hell... I'm paging through a few EPUBs, and sometimes, half the screen is just blank. Is that *STILL* the age-old bug that needs "body {orphans: 0; widows: 0}" set in the EPUB? Damn. I can't believe that. A screen as big as the size of a desert, and you have to *still* go through hoops and loads of undocumented stuff to get it to be used.

Now it comes down to:
- Use KEPUBs in normal mode, with header and footer, but with reading progress
- Use EPUBs in full screen mode, hoping the orphan/widow CSS fixes the blank bottom of the page bug so you can use the entire screen but losing reading progress functions
- Use KEPUBs in full screen mode and live with cut-off fonts.

edit: an orphans/widows addition completely destroys the rendering of the EPUBs I've tested. At this point, the best balance between screen usage, a balanced page, and functionality is to use KEPUB in the normal (header+footer) rendering mode. Any other mode has very annoying problems. EPUB is usable in full screen mode, but each page has a random blank part on the bottom, of 0 lines to half a screen. In normal mode, 2cm of the bottom of the screen is used for showing the page number, which costs you like 4-5 lines text.

I think Kobo should really get their act together with regard to rendering files and offer an official option to turn headers and footers off.

You asked how I got that extra line of text, it's the same way you can resolve the cut off bug with full screen kepubs

Use the patches from Geoff.

I even put my settings in the initial thread about patching 4.x

Line Spacing - set to minimum

Margin - set one tick above minimum

IMHO, the KA1's screen is perfect on my device. I never doubted it; to be honest, I've never seen a 'bad' Kindle or Kobo screen, and I've set up quite some serious amount of e-readers for different people over the years.

I just wish Kobo had a bug-free way to use ALL OF THE SCREEN. Damn... or Amazon would bring out an 8 inch reader or so. If they do so next week, well...

Has anyone tried contacting kobo about this?

Seems like people have been complaining about this and the widow orphan bug forever.

Long-term Kindle user. Any tips on highlighting text? Compared to year of Kindle experience, Kobo highlighting technology sucks to the point where I may even return it.

I just got my aura one today and it's my first kobo reader. I like it so far but, there is one thing that really irks me and it's the top margin. Is there any way to increase the size of the top margin? I searched the forum and I didn't find anything that worked. I saw somthing about adding custom csa when converting ePub files but it didn't work for me!
