What did you have before you bought the H20; did you have a six inch reader? In that case, buying the KA1 is very justifiable, because upgrading from a 6 inch reader to the H2O is actually a smaller step than upgrading from the H2O to the KA1. The first is an increase of 0.8 inch, while the latter upgrade is an increase of 1 inch.

At my reading font size (small, but far from tiny) I get an extra 2-4 words per line and about 4 lines per screen. That's with no mods installed. If I get font size as close as I can (A1 is maybe a tiny bit bigger due to the step sizes) with margin and line spacing both at minimum on H2O and A1 in the chapter/book I'm currently reading it's 43 pages on my A1 and 51 pages on the H2O. I'd say that's a pretty significant difference.

I've been battling with my One

I had problems a couple of hours ago: Home page with my recent books but no books, no dictionaries, all the parameters back to initial state.
Realized I had a corrupt database, so disconnected/reconnected to my Kobo account, then went through the whole rigmarole: parameters, .conf files, dictionaries, etc. Checked the data base with Calibre: ok.

Sent a couple of books (one a Calibre generated catalogue): Calibre said they were on the device. Before disconnecting the device, checked the database: ok. Couldn't find them from the books list. Went the collection way: found the Catalogue, but couldn't open it "oops we can't open it"...

Just reconnected: Calibre still says the database is ok, still sees all the books and their collections. Disconnected the reader: the parameters says there are 2252 books and 4155 Mo available which looks like the 4 Gb seen from Calibre (I have 2248 in the One virtual library in Calibre, but there are a few Kobo items I suppose). The second book is now visible, but still Catalog in a collection but not the book list, error when called: I delete it and give up for tonight.

The screen on my Android device feels like glass, the screen on my A1 feels like plastic. Not that much of a difference from my H2o but the difference is there.

Actually I "downgraded" from Kindle dxg to H2O. But dxg was slow and didn't have a touchscreen and front light.

A long-press on the page number at the bottom changes what is displayed. For ePubs, it swaps between page count and percent read. For kepub, it is page count, percent read and time remaining. And for kepubs, you can swap between per chapter counts or the whole book in the reading settings.

I know I should have been clearer. What I meant was that there's a line of space on the bottom, even in full screen mode, and that it's a pity that you can't put the time or percentage there.

MGlitch, could you reveal how you managed to get a line of text on that very last line?

FYI, I just checked the Indigo Bookstore webpage this morning.

The Aura One is sold out in most Toronto downtown store locations.

There use to be 10 to 20 units at each store when I picked up my Aura One last Tuesday.

Too early to tell, but this a good sign that the Aura One is a success for Kobo.

I have to say the comfort light is amazing. Being able to change the hue to a more sepia toned color is glorious.

At first when I changed it and warmed up the color a bit, I was like "cool this is nice" and read for a bit. Then I reverted back to the "blue" light and my eyeballs wanted to die!

I will definitely be making lots of use out of the warmer colors available. Especially at night (this was just testing during the day inside).

New Kobo user. Two questions:

1. There is no way to highlight text in articles in Pocket app?

2. Any tips on highlighting text? Compared to year of Kindle experience, Kobo highlighting technology sucks to the point where I may even return it.

There is no doubt that this was the finest reader I've used, in terms of screen and display. But once again, glitchiness with the user interface have frustrated me beyond tolerance, and I'm sadly forced to shelve it. (Sadly, because this was above my disposable toy budget.) Maybe next year. But a large part of me hopes I've learned my lesson when it comes to buying Kobo devices.

Indeed. You know, the Kindle Paperwhite 1 actually has a greenish-gray light (if you are able to see it); it's especially clear on lower brightness levels.

Quote:

Yeah, I know I've experienced that about 10 years ago with many people, when I was quite deep into photography, giving lessons in color management, among other things.

"So, you set your monitor to 6500K for normal pictures..."
- "But it's so YELLOW!"
"You'll get used to it." (Be glad I haven't made you set it to 5000K, which is used for color-separated prepress work. Hah!)

After some time, working with a perfectly color calibrated monitor, people started telling me: "I see all kinds of defects now... some monitors are pink, others are green.... and most of them are SO #$%$^ BLUE!"

I can see it with the KA1 as well; with the natural light all the way to the left, the light is really blue. Then, when moving it to the right, the light gets more neutral. At around 30%, it's cold white, at 40% it's neutral, and at 50% it's warm white; after that, the screen gets orange. (At least, to my eyes, and with my particular KA1.)

I like the light a bit above 50%. AUTO is disabled on both, as they are too aggressive; AUTO light is too bright, and AUTO natural is too blue, or too orange.

What's wrong with the GUI?

Apart from really *really* wanting to use the undocumented, experimental, and partly broken full screen function (with which I've been tinkering since Saturday, trying different automatically injected CSS when uploading books to get the font issues fixed), I have had no problems with the device whatsoever. If I'd just take the header and footer for granted, and use either KEPUBs generated by Calibre, or straight-up EPUBs, everything works as expected.

It does make a lot of difference in comfort. Mine is really not even when up all the way, more color on the left and a bright spot near the bottom, but at a lesser level it does help. I may still prefer nightmode in the dark, though. Haven't decided yet and have only been able to get nightmode on the Aura One in koreader.
