The Etruscan Chimera was another enyoyable entry in the Lara McClintoch mystery series. At 6 books in, with 5 to go, I'm wondering if I should continue on or take a break

The Dark Place was better than Fellowship of Fear but the series is still only warm for me. I've put it aside for now.

My next-ups are Jacob's Descent by Sandra Brannan (this latest book will take me to current status in the Liv Bergen series), The Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch, and Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry by Harry Kemelman.

I own all 5 books in the series, with the first 3 books bought in 2013; I've been putting it off but I'm now in the mood to take the plunge.

I thought The Hangman's Daughter was OK, but never really felt compelled to continue beyond the first book.

Inspired by a post by HarryT, I set out on a re-read of the Rabbi Small mysteries. I've just downloaded Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry from the library and will be starting it soon.

I read the paperbacks in the 70s. Now I have the complete People stories collection:

Her collections of other stories were good too, Holding Wonder and The Anything Box.

I seem to remember a TV movie about the People with William Shatner.

I'm afraid I'm not likely to be able to wait that long. I may have to resort to trying to get some in pBook format from the regional library. If they even have any... Ah, yes they do. Three libraries in BC have a copy of Ingathering, which purports to be the complete People stories. (It's available on Amazon for a mere $25. I think I'll pass.)

Two more books recently completed:

"Saturday the Rabbi Went Hungry", by Harry Kemelman.

The second book in the "Rabbi Small" series. When a local Jewish man is found dead in his garage, having apparently committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning, several members of Rabbi Small's congregation express concern that they will lose a large donation that a wealthy man has promised the Temple if a suicide is buried in their cemetery. A number of things about the circumstances of the man's death trouble Rabbi Small, and he decides to investigate the matter. Very enjoyable, although not (to my mind) quite as good as the first book.


"The Adventures of Myrh", by P.N. Elrod. Bought from Baen in 2003. Very good and unusual fantasy. Baen description:

His name is Myhr—rhymes with purr!—he's half-man, half-cat, and all-adventure, traveling the multi-verse with Terrin, a twisted wizard who's into techno-raves and obscene T-shirt art. Displaced from Earth by a travel spell gone bad, they're heading home, bouncing from one bizarre planet after another.

Their latest hasty escape has landed them on a world with a lethal magic problem. While Myhr sings Beatle tunes for their supper, Terrin tries to get them an Astral Plane road map—only there's a catch. All the magic has vanished from Rumpock City, along with nearly all the magicians, the catastrophe linked to an uncanny black fog that rolls through town each night.

Trying to pick up clues, Myhr is picked up himself by the gorgeous lady Filima, a devious and not-so-very-bereaved widow in need of a fall-cat. It's up to Myhr to find where the magic went before Terrin's own powers are drained dry, leaving him worse than dead and the rest of the planet going to Hell in an express-mail handbasket.

Excellent and highly recommended.

Brother Cadfael novels by 'Ellis Peters'
(Yes I know it's Edith Pargeter,thank you!)
Currently on the fifth and loving them. My son
suggested I read them a long while ago, when
he read them, but life intervened and I have
never had the chance, until now!

Wonderful, as expected. A resolution to one plot, and an interesting point in another. But a reasonable place to finish.

When Open Road Media republished all of them in eBook format and they were picked up by my library, I set out to read the entire series. I read the first one (A Morbid Taste for Bones) in September 2014 and finished the last one (Brother Cadfaels's Penance) as 2015 came to a close. Next year, I'll be reading her series featuring British police detective George Felse.

Finished Del Ryder and the Crystal Seed by Matthew David Brough. Juvenile fantasy, well done, though. Might consider reading the next in the series. Halfway through the Roald Dahl biography. NOt as gripping as I would like, though he had led an interesting life.

Except that I haven't yet bought the next one in ebook!

So I read Nine Princes in Amber by Roger Zelazny instead. And I'm following it up immediately with The Guns of Avalon. It seems that his estate is finally putting them out as ebooks.
