Is there a way to see who you've given karma to? Now that I read this, I think I typed over what I gave last to a number higher than I'm allowed to give. So now I'm wondering if the person ever got any karma from me at all!

Thanks, LJ! I'm glad to know the person got the karma, even if it wasn't as much as I thought the value should be.

I don't know why, but somehow I managed to get it in my head that I could give karma up to the same amount I had...so if I had 400, I could give up to 400. Silly me.

If you select the amount of karma it must be an even number equal to or greater than 2 up to your max. If you give all that you can, then the number can be odd.

I can only see who has given me karma, I cannot see how much each member gave. Only if I keep track of my karma and note each time it changes could I start to track how much each person gave. If two people each gave karma between checks there is no way to determine how much each gave (assuming that each gave less than their total amount to give and that there were not new members involved that could only give 1 karma.)

The whole point of karma is to enjoy it and share it when someone helps you, makes you think, or for any other reason (other than seeing a cat) that you want. Giving it does not diminish your karma. [I'm starting to sound like Uncle Duke there, sorry.]

If you really must know how much a person can give, you can compute it by the rules NatCh gives in the sticky.

One of the reasons for the dial-a-karma (as I call it) where you can give any amount up to your max is many of us wound up with high karma numbers to give and worried about giving karma -- yes, the post was good; but, it was not that worth all of the points.

Alex coded the dial-a-karma into MobileRead and I have given karma ever since then.

All of my answers are nice. Sometimes you just don't see it at first. Also, I generally do not respond with the half or full screen posts that Zelda is so famous for writing.

You saw the "<<" and ">>" around the response, did this not give you the impression of a warm reassuring hug? While I am a native Virginian (by the grace of God), I did live in San Antonio for a while and I am somewhat acquainted with the ways of Texans. (I also lived in California for a while and that is a whole other culture.)

Yes, it did .... that's why I asked.

Via my grandparents, I'm 1/4 Virginian and 3/4 Texan.

Pardon me if this has already been answered elsewhere--but since we're on the topic of karma....

I don't understand the "Reduce (fine-tune) your current reputation clout for this post:" box. The first time I ever tried to give karma, it wouldn't let me proceed until I put something in that box. So, I'm confused by the word "reduce" in the prompt, and confused about why I have to put something in the "reduce" box anyway, and basically, well, just confused

The last time I gave karma, I put 50 in the box, but the recipient's karma only went up by 7. I'm confused about that too!!

Thanks in advance for your pity.

You probably only had 7 karma points to give at that time. If you type in more than you can give, it's just going to give all that you are allowed.

There is a rather complex calculation that works out to the karma points you can give. It is based on the number of posts you have made, (I think) how long you have been a member, and how many posts you have added to the forums.

I don't think I have ever reduced a karmic gift ... I either like the post and agree with it, or I don't. In addition, I sometimes just give karma to people who don't like me and with whom I disagree just to be a pain in the rear.

You don't have to enter anything in the box to give karma. Just click on the button and add a comment if you like. Even those are not required.

Concerning karma ...

When I click on the KARMA button, a pop-up titled "Reputation" comes up, saying "Add to Reputation: y", where y is the person who created the post.

So Karma and Reputation are the same?

The pop-up also contains: "Your comments on this post:". Where would these comments show up?

And then "Reduce (fine-tune) your reputation clout for this post:", with in my case it appears a default value of 26. Is this value the amount of karma/reputation I would be giving the poster if I clicked the button "Add to reputation"?

Hi, Keith!

Yes, Karma = reputation.

The comments would be available for the user to read on their "User CP" page. If anyone gives you Karma, you'd see their comments on your "User CP" page.

The default that shows is the highest amount you can currently give - and yes, if you clicked the "Add..." button, it would be given to the poster. I believe they made it reducible for some of the mega-posters who have gobs of Karma and lots of posts and have been here forever - so their default amount is really big.
