As you mentioned, it is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service (U.S.). I don't know if the website whose URL that I'm about to give you has just recently been started, to go along with the anniversary, or not. If not, I don't know how I have overlooked it until now. The National Park Foundation maintains a webpage that they call a "Download Center". Among the goodies are a collection of free ebooks and ebooklets connected with America's National Parks, National Monuments, and maybe other such things. I've given you the URL for the webpage, but let me list the titles of the ebooks/ebooklets: National Park Owner's Guide [the "owner" that it is talking about is me and other U.S. citizens]. National Parks by Rail. Urban Playgrounds. Gimme Shelter [the range of places in the National Parks where you can rest and recharge--from, say, pup tents to lodges]. I Heart Parks. Winter Wonderlands. The Places Nobody Knows. Happy Trails: 25 Unforgettable National Park Hikes. Parks for Play: 35 National Park Adventures for Kids of All Ages. I made a point to call some of these "booklets," because some of them are not very long (but they are still chock-full and tightly-packed with great information and beautiful photos). I noticed that the National Park Owner's Guide is 75 pages long, however, and there may be some ebooks that are longer than it, I dunno. These ebooks and ebooklets are very well done. |

American Kindle Unlimited uses if you are on the fence about getting this bundle you can check out the National Parks ones through that. I have borrowed quite a few of these. I can say that even if you do not plan to use them as travel guides they are great resources to get a good over view of the National Park System.

The ratings are what I consider marginal--4.0 stars (63) at Amazon; 3.74 (371) at GoodReads. But the ratings distribution is nice at both places. The Whispersync narration is only $1.99 more, making the total deal for ebook, audiobook, and syncing only $3.98. |

Commando: A Boer Journal of the Boer War by Deneys Reitz Deneys Reitz was 17 when the Anglo-Boer War broke out in 1899. Reitz describes that he had no hatred of the British people, but "as a South African, one had to fight for one's country." Reitz had learned to ride, shoot and swim almost as soon as he could walk, and the skills and endurance he had acquired during those years were to be made full use of during the war. He fought with different Boer Commandos, where each Commando consisted mainly of farmers on horseback, using their own horses and guns. Commando describes the tumult through the eyes of a warrior in the saddle. Reitz was fortunate to be present at nearly every one of the major battles of the war. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01LW89DQ6/ https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01LW89DQ6/ Also (Not Free) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LW89DQ6/ Trekking On: A Boer Journal of World War One by Deneys Reitz No Outspan: A Boer Journal of Life after the War by Deneys Reitz Deneys Reitz (1882-1944) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deneys_Reitz |

I'm glad to get the book. However, I just don't understand why the British were fighting wild pigs. Oh, wait a minute, that would be boars . . . . In all seriousness, I dare say that 95% of Americans do not know anything about that war, although it was a big event in the history of Great Britain. We're just not taught it in school--unless it's at the university level in a upper level history class or a lower level or above course on British history. I wonder if the Mexican-American War would be a good analogy. Do the British know anything about it? It was a pretty big event in the history of the U.S. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 09-10-2016 at 08:06 PM. |

Gtrs, those of us in eastern Carolina know that a boar is not a wild pig. It's a male pig! He could be as tame as can be. A female pig is a sow.

Gtrs, in these parts the hunters call it "wild boar hunting."
I suppose they will shoot a wild sow too, but I don't know for sure. |
